NEW DELHI: The national capital is bracing for a fresh round of farmers' protest on Monday. Farmers' groups, led by the Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) and other farmer organisations, have decided to march towards Delhi. This has led to increased security and route diversions in Delhi-NCR .

What are the demands of farmers?
  • The decision to march to Delhi was taken after negotiations between farmer outfits, under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), and district authorities failed to get a breakthrough on Sunday.
  • The Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) leader Sukhbir Khalifa on Sunday announced that the members of the farmer organisation will commence their march towards Delhi to demand compensation and benefits under the new agricultural laws. "We will start our march towards Delhi from under the Maha Maya flyover (In Noida)," Sukhbir Khalifa said.
  • Rupesh Verma, district president of All India Kisan Sabha, said farmers have been seeking increased compensation for land acquired by the three authorities -- Noida Authority, GNIDA and YEIDA -- for some time. "We held meetings with the officials of district administration and authorities on Sunday, but that did not yield any results. That's why different farmer organisations decided to go on a Delhi march on Dec 2," he said.
  • The dispute dates to several years. The three development authorities in Gautam Budh Nagar have over the years acquired large tracts of land for urbanisation and several projects. In return, farmers have been demanding 64.7% additional compensation for lands acquired from them along with 10% kisan abadi (compensatory) plots.
  • The matter had reached the Allahabad high court, which ruled in favour of farmers' demands for additional compensation in 2011.
  • The Supreme Court upheld this ruling in May 2015.

Key developments:
Police set up barricades at key borders, including Kalindi Kunj, Chilla Gate, and DND Flyway. DCP (Traffic) Lakhan Singh Yadav said all commercial goods vehicles, including trucks and tractors, will be banned on these key stretches for Monday, and they will be diverted to other routes.

Sunil Pradhan, spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikait), said farmers are ready to sit for a prolonged protest if needed. "The march will begin from the YEIDA office at 10am on Monday. We will take the Noida Expressway to reach Mahamaya and the Chilla border for Delhi. We are equipped with tractors, tents and cooking materials, and we are prepared for an extended protest, if necessary," Pradhan said.

He added that scores of farmers with 200 tractors are ready to march from Greater Noida's Pari Chowk to Delhi via Noida Expressway.
A traffic advisory issued on Sunday evening urged commuters to use the Metro or alternative routes to get to Delhi.

It said that goods vehicles approaching Chilla border will be diverted towards Sector 14A flyover and Sector 15. Those on DND will be directed to the U-turn at the Film City flyover in Noida.
