Chennai councillor opens free gym for youth to combat drug menace

Communist party of India councillor M Renuka starts a gym in North Chennai to keep youth away from drugs, and harmful habits. Renuka, from her ward development funds, set up a unisex gym in Tondiarpet near a slum board colony. This was because the councillor found youth there were influenced by drugs and harmful habits. The free gym set up three months ago has multiple facilities like treadmill, efx, cardio, dumbbells, bench presses and hydraulic weight lifting machines. Boys and girls both hit the gym daily and they say it’s helping them stay healthy and saves a hole from their pockets, as private gyms cost upto Rs 1500-2000 a month. The gym is maintained by the youth there. Parents and gym trainers say the areas there had high drug menace and some of the kids have come out of it now. The councillor plans to add floor.

In the Manamboli Range Private Forest of Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Wildlife Department successfully reunited a 4 to 5-month-old elephant calf with its herd. Discovered wandering on private property, separated from its mother, officials deployed a drone to locate the herd, found 3 km away. After a thorough bath to eliminate human scent, the calf was safely reintegrated. Four monitoring teams were formed by the Forest Department to track the calf and herd. A four-month-old wild elephant, found alone at Pannimedu estate, was rescued by Forest Department teams. Despite initial struggles, the calf was bathed and led into the dense shola forest, while a drone continued herd location efforts. Monitoring continued with four teams tracking the calf and herd movements, ensuring their well-being.

Renowned Tamil cinema actor and DMDK founder-leader Vijayakant, who had been on ventilator support due to pneumonia, passed away Thursday morning in a private hospital. Aged 71, he is survived by his wife Premalatha and sons Shanmuga Pandian and Vijaya Prabhakaran. Earlier on Thursday, the party headquarters disclosed his positive COVID-19 diagnosis and ventilator assistance. He was hospitalized on Tuesday, having experienced recurrent health issues. In 2017, Vijayakant sought medical treatment in the U.S. after undergoing an organ transplant. Additionally, in June 2022, he underwent toe amputation due to prolonged diabetes.
