🌿 In September 2024, Lehome Johnson, Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) Caribbean Islands Small Grants Coordinator at CANARI presented certificates to ten members of the Dolphin Head Local Forest Management Committee who completed the Team Jamaica Training Programme in tourism and hospitality. This initiative is part of the project "Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods through Ecotourism in the Dolphin Head Forest Reserve, Jamaica," supported by #CEPF. 🎓 To date, 52 members of communities surrounding the Dolphin Head Forest Reserve have received training through the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo). This effort is a key strategy of the Local Forest Management Committee to increase local livelihood options and reduce illegal activities in the forest. 👥 Community members will also receive craft making training over the next few months to further help boost eco-friendly tourism in Dolphin Head Forest Reserve! ➡ Learn more about CEPF's second investment in the Caribbean Islands here: https://lnkd.in/eSG_zHF2 📣 Stay tuned for more updates about CEPF in the Caribbean! 🐝 The Caribbean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot is buzzing with excitement! Five projects supported by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) and its Caribbean team at CANARI are promoting beekeeping as a forest-friendly livelihood in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. 👥 Led by the Northern Cockpit Country, South East Cockpit Country, Sawyers and Dolphin Head Local Forest Management Committees in Jamaica and AVSI Foundation in the Dominican Republic, these projects are training local beekeepers in beekeeping and apiary management, ensuring they have modern equipment and proper gear. 🍯 More bees in and around the forests where these projects are taking place means improved pollination, healthier ecosystems and increased biodiversity, further supporting both conservation and local livelihoods. 🍃 Alternative livelihood projects like these, align with the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States (ABAS) and its ambition for environmental protection and sustainability, ensuring a secure future for our Caribbean. 📣 Stay tuned for more updates about CEPF in the Caribbean! 📸 Photo credits: CANARI, NCCLFMCBS & Christina Sinclair Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund The World Bank #biodiversityconservation #sustainablelivelihoods #beekeeping #communityempowerment

🐟 CANARI and the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries (DMRF) engaged both the Scarborough and Castara communities in Tobago, including fisherfolk, and key government agencies to plan for and prioritise actions to address their coastal vulnerability and build climate resilience. 📊 These workshops, which were held on September 10 and 11, 2024, focused on validating findings from vulnerability assessments, and conducting participatory scenario planning to improve local understanding of and identify specific strategies to adapt to future climate risks and other changes. This process will inform the roll-out of practical coastal resilience measures for the community over the next 4-6 months. ➡ This work is part of the Tech4CoastalResilience project in Trinidad funded through HIT RESET Caribbean by OACPS and EU. 🌿 CANARI is excited to share its latest case study entitled “Building Sustainability through Business Strengthening”, which highlights six nature-based enterprises supported under the GEF-IWEco project in Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. In addition to business strengthening, this CANARI led project helped the SMEs build climate resilience into their activities and conduct ecosystem stewardship activities to protect the natural resources their enterprises depend on. 🌱 CANARI’s three-pronged model of support to SMEs builds their overall sustainability. 🔗 Read the case study here: https://bit.ly/47HdKqR ➡ This case study was produced under the CANARI initiative on Strengthening nature-based enterprises and livelihoods funded by the Global Environment Facility through the Integrating Water, Land and Ecosystems Management in Caribbean Small Island Developing States (GEF-IWEco) project implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
