Vishala N., our Accounts Payables Team Lead, once found herself buried in the monotony of daily data entry, staring at endless emails and feeling like she was drowning in repetitive tasks. Every day felt the same—transferring data from one screen to another with no end in sight. The weight of it all made her wonder if this was all her career had to offer. Then something shifted. When Tristan first picked up a chess piece little did he know that in less than a year he would be standing on an international stage, representing team TTO! Tristan Siewdass, a form 3 student at Hillview College, always had a knack for seeing the bigger picture. A recent member of the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association (TTCA), his journey in chess began with small victories in local competitions, steadily climbing through the ranks of the National Junior Championship, National Youth Championship, and National Swiss Championship tournaments. Each match honed his skills, teaching him the importance of foresight, discipline, and perseverance. When the opportunity arose for Tristan to compete internationally, his father, Neal Siewdass — a valued member of our Ramps team and Tristan’s #1 supporter — knew this was a dream worth chasing. Determined to see Tristan’s passion turn into reality, they set their sights on the Central American and Caribbean Youth Chess Tournament, marking a significant milestone: Tristan’s first international tournament. Chess teaches us that every move counts, in life, as on the board. With it these thoughtful, strategic decisions often define our success. Lawrence Duprey was not just a leader; he was a visionary whose heart and soul were deeply rooted in the Caribbean. He saw the potential of our region, not just as it was but as it could be. With unparalleled foresight, he transformed Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO) into the Caribbean's largest conglomerate, with 65 companies across 32 countries. His efforts significantly improved the quality of life for countless people, providing opportunities and creating businesses that added immense value to the region. During the global financial crisis, like many other giants, CLICO faced massive challenges. While some disagreed with certain decisions he made during this tumultuous period, his actions provided lessons that continue to influence the region today. Duprey dared to dream on a scale few could imagine, reshaping the Caribbean business landscape and paving the way for the next generation of leaders. His journey serves as a powerful reminder to current and future entrepreneurs of the impact of bold vision and the importance of learning from adversity. Rest in peace, Lawrence Duprey.
