Through the Innovating Cashew Value Chain Project supported by Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships, CARE Tanzania in partnership with the Foundation for Rafiki Tanzania (FORT), recently conducted practical training for 12 women from different VSLA groups. From October 8th to 10th, project participants learned how to produce value-added cashew products like cashew cookies and roasted cashews. This training is a critical step toward empowering women, helping them unlock new income opportunities and lead small-scale processing ventures. It also builds the capacity of DUGA AMCOS to expand revenue generation, as members can now create and market various cashew-based products. The Innovating Cashew Value Chain Project creates economic opportunities for women, but also fosters long-term, sustainable growth in the cashew value chain. The community #SavingsGroups CARE works with today looks very different to those from 30 years ago. How? 🤔 🤗 Now #VSLA don’t just provide opportunities for #women to improve their confidence and leadership; #VSLA are platform for overcoming the challenges women face in homes, communities, and markets that prevent them from improving their economic situation. Country Director @ CARE Tanzania | Leadership | Strategic Thinking | Board Executive | Mentor | Kofi Annan Global Public Health Leadership Fellow |
I had the privilege of attending the launch of the #VOICESproject (Vitalizing Opportunities in Circular Economy and Sustainable Solutions in Lake Tanganyika) with Catholic Relief Services Tanzania office yesterday. This important project aims to improve water quality through sustainable and inclusive economic practices. Congratulations to #CRSTanzania and #CRSZambia and all partners on this remarkable achievement! We look forward to continued collaboration. During the panel discussion, I shared CARE Tanzania's experience in the circular economy, focusing on the #cashew value chain project supported by the Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships. In partnership with Biotan Group ltd (private sector), #CARETanzania transforms cashew #byproducts into valuable resources like steam energy, charcoal bricks, chicken feed, and organic manure, highlighting how #waste can drive #economicgrowth. I emphasized the need for #collaboration between the private sector and government to identify sectors that foster #inclusive growth, stimulate local economies, and create job opportunities. Private sector #innovation and sustainable market solutions are crucial in shaping a more sustainable future. For these efforts to succeed, a #supportive regulatory environment is essential. Lastly, I highlighted the importance of addressing key #socialissues like land ownership, financial literacy and access #vsla, policy awareness, and cooperative membership to ensure inclusivity in circular economy activities across sectors. At CARE Tanzania, we apply these principles in all our projects, including the #Cashew Value Chain. This empowers #women and #youth by promoting their #fullparticipation and providing a platform to leverage #opportunities in the circular economy. The New Approaches to Upscaling and Resilience Ecosystem-Based Adaptation #NATURE project, supported by the Global EbA Fund, is facilitating the documentation of impactful initiatives taken by project pilot districts (Mufindi, Chemba, Kiteto, Simanjiro, and Same) in protecting the ecosystem and building community in the face of climate change. Led by Mr. Alfei Maseke the senior project manager, early results show that ecosystem-based adaptation strategies—such as #treeplanting near water sources, farms, and public institutions; beekeeping in catchment areas; conservation #agriculture; drip and fallow irrigation; water harvesting; block farming, indoor livestock and poultry farming; designated grazing zones, #solarpowered irrigation; forest conservation; tree enrichment in degraded areas; carbon credit initiatives, aquaculture, ecotourism, sustainable land use, and conflict resolution over land and water—are making a measurable difference. These interventions are driving increased productivity, improving household incomes, and supporting socio-economic and environmental sustainability for farmers and pastoralists. The ongoing analysis is focused on evaluating the cost-effectiveness and scalability of these interventions, ensuring they remain accessible and practical for wider adoption. Upon completion, the final report will be shared with decision-makers, planners, and private sector stakeholders, serving as a guide for CARE Tanzania’s continued efforts to promote ecosystem-based adaptation and drive a green revolution. CARE Tanzania, through the Scale Up Farmers Field and Business School project, continues to facilitate impactful #GenderEquality dialogues in 16 project villages of Iringa District Council. These discussions address crucial topics, including women's rights to land ownership, combating gender-based violence, involving men and boys, decision-making, and access to resources. The sessions are held in partnership with key stakeholders, including the district community development officers, ward legal assistants, ward community development officers, gender desk police officers, lead farmers, religious leaders, and respected elders. Participants have expressed deep appreciation for CARE and its partners, noting that such education is often lacking within their communities. #CARETanzania CARE Patrick Sikana Prudence Masako Auson Komwihangilo Mkami Kyanyari Christina John David Manyonga Abinet Tasew Sitotaw Neemiah Kahakwa Musa Ndunguru Daniel Katebalila Barnabas Mtelevu Neema Lweeka Maryloema Panga MWANANE S MADEBO Alfei Maseke Donald Liya Samuel Chambi Shukrani Chilewa Reginald Mpolo Mlingi Ibobo Allen Kaijanangoma Joel Lunyungu Venancia Gwamagobe Ramadhan Athuman agnes francis Fortunatha Mollel Ally Mandari Edward Charles

A Must-read: CARE Tanzania and Pathfinder International's Forum on Advancing Youth Well-being in Tanzania At the 11th Tanzania Health Summit in Fumba Town, #Zanzibar, on October 3rd, 2024, CARE Tanzania and Pathfinder International hosted a transformative forum: Beyond AYSRH: A Paradigm Shift in Advancing Adolescent and Youth Well-being. This impactful gathering was a call to action, emphasizing that #youthwellbeing goes beyond sexual and reproductive health #AYSRH. By connecting sectors such as #education, #health, and #agriculture, we envisioned a future where every young person in Tanzania thrives. Keynote speakers Ms. Prudence Masako, Country Director of CARE Tanzania, and Dr. Joseph Komwihangiro, Country Director of Pathfinder International, set an inspiring tone, urging a re-examination of holistic #approaches to adolescent and youth well-being—an urgent priority as youth account for 70% of Tanzania's population. Dynamic panelists, including Dr. #GraceMagembe (Deputy Permanent Secretary, Health - President's Office Regional Administration and Local Government), Ms. #MashavuFakih (Director Department of Alternative Learning and Adult Education—The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training Zanzibar), and Rutasha Dadi, PhD (Health Technical Specialist Consultant—PwC for Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada), explored strategies to close sectoral gaps, while powerful testimonials from young entrepreneurs, #HadijaAthumani (26 yrs married and mother of a five-year-old and a two-year-old) and #SwabirAbdalla (22 yrs) brought the conversation to life, highlighting what it truly takes for communities to embrace youth well-being. Moderated by Ms. Catherinerose Barretto, the discussions led to actionable solutions, underscoring the urgency of a multi-sectoral approach aligned with the National Adolescent and Youth Initiatives and Action #NAIA pillars. The vibrant dialogue stirred thoughtful questions on policies, all expertly addressed by the panelists. As we move forward, let’s keep this momentum, ensuring young voices shape every program and policy. Together, we can create a future where all youth lead empowered, fulfilling lives, prioritizing health, education, mental well-being, and social inclusion. Join us on this journey! On October 11th, 2024, CARE Tanzania proudly commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child with impactful activities across the country! Our Country Director, Ms. Prudence Masako, joined the #ShiraziOrganization in a powerful forum in Zanzibar, where over 1,500 young women (aged 15 to 25) gathered at Nyamanzi Grounds. Together, they explored ways to advance the economic, political, and social opportunities available to girls. Ms. Prudence shared CARE Tanzania’s collaborative work with the government and partners, which in 2024 alone, has positively impacted 1,324 young women in #Zanzibar and over 30,000 across mainland #Tanzania aged 15 to 35. Through the Her Money, Her Life #HMHL project, we further celebrated the theme “Girls and Leadership—Engage Her, the Time is Now” across the districts of #Bumbuli, #Mufindi, #Njombe, #Rungwe, and #Busokelo. CARE facilitated key sessions on self-awareness, leadership, gender equality, and menstrual hygiene, ensuring that parents, teachers, and boys are allies in supporting girls' empowerment. Hygiene kits, including sanitary pads and soap, were distributed to promote girls' health and dignity. In Bumbuli District, 439 students attended the event at Mgwashi Secondary School, where 204 girls received hygiene kits. In Rungwe and Busokelo, 951 students participated in celebrations at Bulyaga Secondary School and Busokelo Girls Secondary School, with 723 girls receiving hygiene kits. In Mufindi, CARE Tanzania, in partnership with the district council and World Vision, marked the day at Kasanga Primary and Igowole Secondary Schools, distributing hygiene kits to 600 girls. In Njombe, 78 girls from Nyombo Secondary School in Ikuna Ward also received hygiene kits. At CARE, women and girls are at the core of every project. This International Day of the Girl Child, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering girls and removing the barriers they face. "#Women, you were created in the image of God, but people have made you think that you are chickens, and you yourselves also think so; but you are actually #Eagles. Straighten your wings and fly; do not be content with chicken feed. With your own efforts and with the support of your friends, take yourselves out of this state of weakness in which you are today, so that you can enjoy freedom and justice in a peaceful world.” - Julius Kambarage Nyerere, First President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
