I am attending the 1st African Conference on Adult Learning and Education here in Cape Town bringing together ALE professionals and practitioners from 17 countries under the theme: "Adult Education for a Just Transition: ALE as a Key to Community Development." It's been noted that transition is inevitable but justice is not. So, in the two days in Cape Town and when we return home, we are tasked to explore alternatives to make ALE a facilitator of a Just Transition. Think about climate change, digital transition, employment relations, agriculture practices among other aspects of a world in transition and position all these in ALE programming, then you will appreciate the role of Adult Education and Education even better. Together with 🇺🇬 colleagues, we have presented our case for Estabishing Community Lerarning Centers that offer need based knowledge transfer and situated learning opportunities for sustainable development.Robert Jjuuko Twine Bananuka Imelda Kyaringabira Engabi Joseph Kifampa DVV International East Africa

Ivor Baatjes, the Executive Director of Canon Collins Trust, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the vital role of Adult Learning and Education (ALE) in achieving a Just Transition. Here are some key takeaways to shape the future of ALE: ➡️ Foster and enhance dialogic community spaces that cultivate knowledge within and for the communities. ➡️ Explore alternative models for Community Learning Centres, positioning them as essential parts of the community instead of viewing them as external or top-down entities 'working in' or 'collaborating with’ the community. ➡️ Promote and support innovative research and educational methodologies based on transdisciplinary and community-focused research. ➡️ Restructure internal operations to prioritize community needs and engagement at the forefront of its mission. ➡️ Realign curricula, teaching, and learning to address the pressing challenges faced by communities. ALE in the just transition is a social justice issue

For several decades, various countries in Africa have been implementing community learning centres in various forms, which are known by various names, such as Resource Centres, Telecentres, Libraries, and Multipurpose Community Development Centres. However, we refer to them as Community Learning Centres (CLCs)! These CLCs serve as a one-stop hub for youth and adult education, supporting continuous learning and personal development. They play a vital role in enhancing social and economic progress and have gained recognition for providing various Adult Learning and Education (ALE) services to individuals and communities. So, what are the aims and objectives of CLCs? i. To offer lifelong learning opportunities, including ALE. ii. To promote community development. iii. To encourage human development and enhance the quality of life. iv. To meet local needs with customized services. v. To provide a range of services all in one place. vi. To foster empowerment and drive social, cultural, and economic transformation. vii. To contribute to sustainable development.
