Patients treated by female doctors have a lower mortality rate when compared to patients treated by their male counterparts, a new study suggests. Researchers found this was especially true for female patients and observed a similar pattern for hospital readmission rates.🏥 Researchers looked at data from over 776,000 male and female patients aged 65 years or older and treated between 2016 and 2019. They analysed patient mortality and readmission 30 days after hospital admission. The weight-loss drug semaglutide - commonly sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy - reduced cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack in adults with preexisting disease independent of weight loss. As an increasing number of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms promise to improve accuracy and speed up the work of radiologists, some have wondered if the programmes will replace these doctors or ease their workload.🌐 The first large, rigorous studies testing AI-assisted radiologists against those working alone give hints at the potential improvements. Initial results from a Swedish study of 80,000 women showed that AI-supported breast screening detected 20% more cancers compared to two radiologists. Using AI instead of a second reviewer decreased the human workload by 44%, according to the study.🌟 Still, the study’s lead author says it’s essential that a radiologist make the final diagnosis in all cases. Researchers say the app could be used to detect early signs of dementia in younger people as well as monitor the effects of treatment.📱 Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in the US found that remotely deployed smartphone tests could help to detect frontotemporal dementia in people who are genetically predisposed to it before symptoms start.👌🏻 Researchers partnered with a software company Datacubed Health to make the tests that looked at executive functioning, such as planning or organising, and controlling impulses, as the part of the brain that controls executive functioning can atrophy as the disease progresses. The data collected included voice recordings as well as walking, balance, and language tests.🙌🏻 The app was tested between 2019 and 2023 with 360 participants, 209 women and 151 men. The mean age of those who participated was 54. Many were genetically predisposed to get the disease but had not yet developed symptoms. Researchers in the UK have been granted £1.7 million (€1.98 million) to develop a lung cancer vaccine. The «LungVax» they aim to develop would be the world’s first vaccine against lung cancer in people at risk of developing it.🙏 The technology for the new vaccine will be similar to that used for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19. The funding will come from Cancer Research UK and the CRIS Cancer Foundation.
