Modern Hives Training and Climate Education at Bukalabi. At Bukalabi, an innovative training program is underway, bringing a new dimension to agricultural education for our young learners. This initiative, focusing on modern beekeeping practices, is equipping pupils with valuable knowledge and skills that will benefit them and their communities. The training covers essential aspects of modern hives, including the materials used, the advantages and disadvantages of different hive types, and the process of constructing these hives. Pupils are gaining hands-on experience with various hive models, learning to differentiate between them and understand their specific uses in modern beekeeping. Key Highlights of the Training: Materials Used in Modern Hives: Pupils are introduced to the diverse materials employed in constructing modern hives, from wood to synthetic options, each offering unique benefits and challenges. Advantages and Disadvantages of Each Hive Type: The training includes a comparative analysis of various hive types, allowing students to evaluate their efficiency and suitability for different environments. Types of Modern Hives and Their Construction: Students learn about the different types of modern hives, including Langstroth, Top-Bar, and Flow Hives, and are guided through the step-by-step process of creating these hives. This practical knowledge is complemented by the introduction of a new examination set for Primary 5 (P.5) and Primary 6 (P.6) students. The exam will assess their understanding of the climate syllabus they have recently completed, integrating their new skills in modern beekeeping with their broader environmental education. The training program is a part of ACCESS's broader mission to empower communities through education and sustainable practices. ACCESS, the African Community Centre for Social Sustainability, is dedicated to improving lives in Nakaseke, Uganda, by providing medical care, education, and economic opportunities. Through initiatives like this modern hives training, ACCESS is not only enhancing agricultural knowledge but also fostering a deeper understanding of environmental sustainability among the youth. By combining modern beekeeping with climate education, ACCESS is preparing students to be proactive stewards of both their local and global environments. The organization’s commitment to integrating practical skills with broader environmental awareness is helping shape a generation of informed and responsible future leaders. We celebrate the progress made in this program and look forward to seeing how these young minds will apply their newfound knowledge to make a positive impact. As they continue to learn and grow, their contributions to sustainable practices and climate awareness will undoubtedly shape a brighter future for all Tauck Family Foundation Segal Family Foundation Robert Kalyesubula MD, PhD, FRCP Photo credit: katamba wilson

  • The African Community Centre for Social Sustainability (ACCESS) continues to demonstrate its commitment to community development and education by playing an instrumental role in the UGAPRIVU Luweero chapter. UGAPRIVU, the Uganda Association of Private Vocational Institutions, brings together over 60 vocational representatives with the shared goal of aligning vocational institutions with the government structure, ensuring that these institutions are well-organized and effectively contribute to Uganda's socio-economic growth. ACCESS has been an active participant in this initiative, and its dedication has been recognized through the election of its representative to provide leadership in two critical areas: project management and social enterprise development within the UGAPRIVU Luweero chapter. This appointment is a testament to ACCESS's longstanding commitment to enhancing the quality and impact of vocational education in the Luweero region. As the appointed leader on the project side, ACCESS's representative will focus on developing and implementing strategic projects that will benefit vocational institutions under the UGAPRIVU umbrella. These projects aim to enhance the quality of vocational training, ensuring that students acquire the skills needed to meet the demands of the modern job market. On the social enterprise side, ACCESS's leadership will guide initiatives that promote the integration of social enterprise models within vocational institutions. This approach will not only provide students with practical business skills but also contribute to the sustainability of the institutions themselves by creating additional revenue streams. Through its involvement in the UGAPRIVU Luweero chapter, ACCESS continues to lead by example, fostering a collaborative environment where vocational institutions can thrive. This leadership role aligns perfectly with ACCESS's mission to empower communities through education, economic empowerment, and sustainable development. By guiding both project management and social enterprise initiatives, ACCESS is poised to make a lasting impact on vocational education in the Luweero region, ensuring that these institutions remain relevant and resilient in the face of changing economic conditions. • At our organization, the fish harvested from our pond plays a crucial role in nourishing both nursing students and preschoolers, providing them with the essential protein needed for growth, strength, and learning. Each meal they enjoy represents more than just a nutritional benefit; it symbolizes a deep connection between personal well-being and environmental stewardship. Nursing students benefit from this high-quality protein, which supports their physical and cognitive development, preparing them for the demanding challenges of their education and future careers. For preschoolers, this nutritious fish contributes to their healthy growth and development during these formative years. Our commitment to sustainable practices ensures that these fish are raised in a carefully managed environment, reflecting our dedication to preserving natural resources and protecting the planet for future generations. This cycle of care and nourishment highlights how every choice we make—from the food we consume to the practices we adopt—can have a significant impact on both our health and our environment. By prioritizing sustainability, we are investing in a future where the well-being of our communities and the health of our planet are in harmony. This effort ensures that the benefits of today’s harvest will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come, illustrating the profound connection between our daily lives and the world around us.
