In July 2024, AFRIpads donated 800 SchoolGirl Kits and backpacks, underwear, and Girl Talk Booklets to Joy for Children Uganda. The organisation has reached out to girls in need in the slums of Bwaise and Bukoto in Kampala district and Lira District, where they commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child. Fatima, a leader of the JoyForChildren Savings Sacco, shared how this support has been: “The kits have made a huge difference. Many girls in our community were struggling to manage their periods due to a lack of resources. Now, they have the products they need and the knowledge to use them properly. We are very grateful for this support.” We extend our gratitude to the John and Marine van Vlissingen Foundation and the AFRIpads Foundation for their generous contributions that made this impact possible. You too can join in supporting these girls and make a lasting difference! #AFRIpadsDignifiedFlows #AFRIpadsSustainableFlows
AFRIpads
Manufacturing
AFRIpads is the world’s leading social enterprise manufacturing reusable menstrual products.
About us
In 2010, AFRIpads introduced the reusable sanitary pad to Sub-Saharan Africa with an aim to overcome key challenges that women and girls were facing whilst on their period including access, affordability and sustainability. Since then, AFRIpads has grown to become the world’s leading social enterprise manufacturing reusable sanitary pads. To date, the AFRIpads Menstrual Kits have positively impacted the lives of more than 5 million women and girls around the world. Following a decade of experience, AFRIpads has learnt that in order to drive change, we need more than a product. Therefore, AFRIpads works with humanitarian and development partners to provide a holistic menstrual health management (MHM) solution which combines product, education and evidence. As a social enterprise dedicated to contributing to rural development, the AFRIpads factory in rural Uganda provides meaningful employment to over 150 local women.

It was a privilege to share our journey at the SEOC and connect with such a passionate community. A heartfelt thank you to Opes-Lcef for their unwavering support—together, we are making strides in social entrepreneurship. We are excited about future collaborations. #SEOC2024 #BeyondInclusion #SocialEntrepreneurship #ImpactInvesting #MenstrualHealth #MenstrualEquity

Still buzzing from the Social Enterprise Open Camp hosted by Opes-Lcef, where Paul Grinvalds and I had the privilege of giving an opening keynote about our entrepreneurial journey of building AFRIpads from a seed idea to exit. Connecting with over 350 fellow social entrepreneurs, impact investors, and donors made for an inspiring four days of learning and sharing. Here are some of the learnings we shared with the SEOC community: ➡️ Social entrepreneurship is full of trade-offs ➡️ Partner with investors who share your values ➡️ Need doesn't guarantee demand ➡️ Engage your customers, always ➡️ If you're disrupting an industry, be ready to lead ➡️ It sounds cliche, but find your work-life balance When Opes-Lcef invested in AFRIpads in 2013 it changed the game for us. To Elena Casolari, Elisabet Nyquist and the amazing Opes board and team, an enduring and heartfelt thank you for supporting us every step of the way and truly 'walking the talk'. The more everyone knows about the human body, the better! That’s why we educate girls and boys alike about menstrual health. Including boys in MHH education helps us destigmatise periods as something to be hidden and afraid of. This knowledge also empowers boys to support their sisters and friends. A huge thank you to our partners for their invaluable support in this initiative.
Along with the donation, students received hands-on training on how to use the reusable pads. In the coming months, we'll be closely monitoring the impact of this donation on the lives of young girls in these schools, documenting their stories, and exploring how improved menstrual health can enhance school attendance and overall wellbeing. By working together, we can create sustainable solutions for menstrual health and empower girls and their communities. Across Africa, millions of girls miss school during their periods due to a lack of access to menstrual products. This challenge, which was later highlighted in UNESCO’s 2014 "Puberty Education and Menstrual Hygiene Management" report, inspired us early on to create affordable, sustainable, and accessible reusable menstrual products to help increase school attendance rates. "Every extra year a girl stays in school, she has a higher earning potential and is more likely to engage in family planning." – Sophia Grinvalds, AFRIpads Ltd. Co-Founder.
