70% of Uganda’s rural population relies on crops like beans, maize, and vegetables for their livelihoods. Recently, Isaac Muhofa, the Venture Builder at Rootical, visited input shops in Namayumba, Wakiso district, alongside Emmanuel Luwemba, co-founder of Eden Seeds, a farmer-owned #indigenousseed company. Isaac observed a strong focus on these essential seeds, highlighting their critical role in promoting #foodsecurity and boosting agricultural productivity in the region. During the visit, Isaac noted that Hybrid maize varieties like Longe 10 and Bazuka are the top choices, though the open-pollinated Longe 5 remains popular in some locations. It is particularly similar to indigenous maize sold by Eden Seeds. The bean demand in this area is lower than the demand for maize. Farmers in Namayumba show a preference for second-generation hybrid seeds like Asle tomatoes, cucumbers, and French beans, known for their high germination rates. Vegetable seeds, particularly Nakati and Buga, are consistently in demand by input shops but are often kept hidden due to concerns about informal measuring practices. Dodo seeds are also available, though less frequently. Order sizes and frequencies fluctuate with the seasons, peaking during the rainy season. Input shops tend to place smaller, more frequent orders to minimize spoilage, with maize orders being more regular than beans.  During peak planting times, shops report selling between 400 and 1,000 kg of maize per month, while bean sales are about half that volume. Isaac emphasizes that #quality and certification of #seeds is critical, as poor germination can lead to a loss of trust in suppliers. He also notes that strong supplier relationships are essential in the agricultural market, as many shops rely on credit arrangements for seed deliveries. Isaac’s  findings reveal significant opportunities for Eden Seeds to cater to market demands, enhance partnerships with farmer suppliers, and optimize distribution routes for efficient supply to key agro-input shops. Isaac Muhofa and Ruth Ndwiga represented the Rootical team at the final The Neycha Accelerator & Fund bootcamp day and gained invaluable insights about building impactful #agroecological enterprises. It was truly inspiring to witness businesses from #Kenya and #Uganda coming together to build synergies under one roof. Neycha identifies and partners with growth-oriented #AgroecologicalEnterprises (AEEs), providing them with the capacity, capital and connections they need to grow their impact and businesses. Isaac, the venture builder at Rootical while at the final day of the Neycha bootcamp, reaffirmed that the East African region has a vibrant pool of agroecological businesses with immense potential to transform the food system. The #entrepreneurs demonstrated a deep commitment to integrating agroecological principles into their business models. The introduction of the B-Act (Business Agroecological Criteria Tool) has proven invaluable, helping businesses assess and enhance their level of agroecological integration. The preparedness of the entrepreneurs pitching their ideas was admirable, showcasing a strong commitment to their ventures. Ruth, our talent manager, was particularly impressed by how many of them are owning longer value chains, allowing them to maximize profits while managing quality and standards effectively. While the potential to scale these businesses is clear, it’s crucial for them to articulate what sets them apart in competitive markets. Their unique approaches to addressing #FoodSystem challenges will be key to their success, and Isaac believes that Neycha will play a vital role in supporting this journey. My Day 3: World Food Forum I had the opportunity to share our model at the FAO Science & Innovation Forum 2024. Rootical is demonstrating that the Start-up Studio model is both replicable and investable. We are already working with partners in the Netherlands and the USA on this model and are actively seeking partners worldwide to replicate it. We aim to support many farmers in transitioning to agroecology, making healthy and nutritious foods affordable and accessible to mainstream Ugandans.
