Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has encouraged Muni University students to familiarize themselves with taxation in order to thrive in today’s business environment. Simon Tumwesigye Karokora, the Customs manager of enforcement and border control for the northern region, made this call while addressing Muni University students in Arua City this week. He advised them to research taxes that apply to business before engaging in them. “Before you trade in any business, you should consult on its tax implications because some goods are prohibited, restricted, or may have high import duty rates,” said Tumwesigye. “Reliable and correct tax information will help you in business evaluation,” he added. He explained the different customs duties and called upon the students to desist from engaging in illicit trade. “Smuggling undermines normal trade and distorts prices in the market,” Tumwesigye emphasized, adding, “it is a killer to the national economy.” The students were also educated on URA’s mandate, the different domestic taxes, and aspects of TIN registration and non-tax revenues collected by other government agencies. The engagement also featured a question and answer session where URA’s experts addressed a range of topics, including handling confiscated goods, opportunities for students in URA, registration of numberless motorcycles, and exemptions for foreign investors, among others. Herbert Rwothomio, the university’s guild speaker, appreciated URA for empowering them. “This is a great opportunity, and for the three years I have spent in this university, I have not witnessed such a session,” Rwothomio expressed. “We are now more conversant with your role, and I encourage you to continue because this university was built out of taxes.” Washington Opio, the Ag. Dean of Students at the University, similarly commended URA for the informative session. He noted that the management helped in improving URA’s working relations with the university. This engagement is part of larger efforts by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to ensure tax literacy among citizens of all ages and achieve tax compliance. #LearnTaxUg

Team One nabs Toyota Noah with 3,516 smuggled feature phones in Mukono 🌍 The Food and Agricultural Organization FAO puts the number of Ugandan fishermen doing business on Lake Victoria at 130,000. The Lake is undoubtedly a source of livelihood for many families living along the shore lines. A handful of these fishermen are however are utilizing their boats for a dangerous trade – smuggling. Team One enforcement’s attention has recently been drawn to an emerging smuggling trend involving fishermen who convey uncustomed goods along the waters of Lake Victoria from Kisumu to various landing ports along the shoreline. With this information, they recruited and planted informers among the fishermen. On the night of 23rd March 2025, last week, the chicken came home to roost for a smuggler. The smuggler had succeeded in getting his ‘fish’ from the Kenyan shore into Uganda. Once at one of the landing sites in Buikwe, the consignment was offloaded from the boat and packed into a Toyota Noah Reg No. UBN 215 T. While all this was done under the cover of the night, the watchful eyes of the informer observed everything and relayed the intel expeditiously. The Team One Field Team which lay in ambush by the highway near Kampala Cement gave chase upon seeing the vehicle of interest speeding past. The driver, aware of the hunters on his tail, peeled off the highway to explore his off-road options. His bravery did not match up with his vehicle’s engineering as the muddy feeder roads did him in. He was duly arrested to aid investigations and the vehicle impounded to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Headquarters in Nakawa. Verification revealed a total of 3,516 feature phones of the Itel and Villaon brands. The consignment is worth about Ugx 78 Million in taxes and fines. The fate of the motor vehicle associated in this operation is forfeiture to the state. Smuggling certainly stings. #URAEnforcementAlert

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has urged landlords to voluntarily declare their properties and register for rental income tax to avoid penalties associated with non-compliance. Aijuka Isaac - the Ag. Supervisor of Tax Education Outreach in South Western Uganda made this call while addressing landlords in Mbarara and Lyantonde. “URA has a voluntary disclosure programme through which you can declare the buildings you rent out,” Aijuka stated, “declare all the rooms from which you receive rent, whether in Uganda or abroad. If Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) discovers this through its intelligence, you will face substantial penalties,” he added. Aijuka explained that rental income tax is levied on immovable property, and it is the landlord's responsibility to self-declare their expected rental earnings for the financial year. He provided practical calculations to demonstrate how URA calculates rental income tax. Additionally, Aijuka advised property owners to maintain records of rental payments, emphasising their importance when filing a provisional rental income tax return during the first three months of the financial year. “Rental payment records help determine how much you will collect by the end of the year,” Aijuka stressed. “When you file a final tax return without such records, URA will forcefully assess you, which is not what we desire. We want you to comply voluntarily.” During the meeting, SAMUEL RWAKINANGA TAYEBWA, the Mbarara City Principal Tax Officer, clarified the difference between rental income tax and property tax. “Rental income tax is charged by URA on the rent earned from letting a property, while property tax is charged by the city council on buildings constructed within the city.” He emphasised that these levies are enshrined in the constitution. The landlords were also advised to practice tax planning and utilise URA platforms to enhance their understanding of taxation. #LearnTaxUg #FfeBanno

Achieving a normal flow in tax compliance is the dream of every Domestic tax officer, but it doesn’t occur overnight; it is cultivated over time. Kagadi town exemplifies this concept. On the opening day of the Tujenge Uganda mobile tax office’s excursion, the warm reception from local business owners toward the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Tax Education team and the Hoima Domestic taxes Office staff was both refreshing .It was a conversation about Payment Registration Number(PRN) issuance and payment. Taxpayers debated how much to pay, with some eager to maintain their previous year’s status quo. Meanwhile, tax officers sought to leverage visible growth, educating them on why they needed to contribute more than in the past. It quickly became apparent that the Tujenge Uganda initiative and door-to-door visits were familiar to the traders in the area. Patrick KITAMIRIKE, a Hoima DT officer who participated in Tujenge Uganda’s initial venture into Kagadi in February 2022, provided valuable perspective. “What you see now is a far cry from what we encountered four years ago. Kagadi was originally a hub for smuggling, and its business people were both unaware of taxes and resistant to tax officials,” he explained. He noted that the Tax Education team focused on educating the community for a week before returning a month later to assess and collect through a door-to-door ‘tax katale’ model. “Since then, traders have embraced tax compliance. Most now possess TINs traceable to 2022 and payment records dating back the same period,” Kitamirike added. He credited the Tujenge Uganda mobile tax office with helping the Hoima station make significant strides in Kagadi. Currently, the Hoima DT station focuses on regular monitoring, engaging taxpayers, and supporting small businesses in becoming substantial contributors. Sectors such as hardware, general trade, and health services dominate, with banks like Stanbic and credit providers emerging.
