Regenerative dairy farming can be a more profitable business model for UK farmers, while supporting nature and climate goals. Through our great partnership with NatWest Group, we have developed a series of reports and tools to accelerate the transition to regenerative dairy in the UK. 𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 – Our latest research on UK dairy farms transitioning from industrial to regenerative systems shows that, in many cases, regenerative farms are more: 1. Profitable than they were prior to transitioning, as they have lower costs and retain more of their revenues. 2. Resilient business and respond better to price shocks (fuel, fertilizer, milk), as they rely less on expensive inputs and can access additional revenue streams. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 – Farmers across the country are already doing it! We developed five case studies of farmers who either are transitioning or have transitioned to a regenerative system. The case studies capture the actions that the farmers adopted, the reasons for adopting them, and their outcomes. 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣𝗦 – However, it is evident that the risks and costs of the transition affect farmers disproportionately, especially in the short-term, and there are currently insufficient incentives to enable the sector to transition at scale. The costs and risks of the transition need to be distributed equitably and efficiently across the supply chain: retailers, processors, farmers, banks, insurance providers, consumers, and government. 𝗚𝗨𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 – If this is all too complex or abstract, we have developed a guide for practitioners and relationship managers, which outlines different actions that could be part of their transition and their impact on cash flow, nature, and climate. We have published a series of reports on regenerative dairy: • 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: https://lnkd.in/dwRvjQjc • 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀: https://lnkd.in/dWKhRijE • 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: https://lnkd.in/dmxWtzz3 • T𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻: https://lnkd.in/d-QDqN9Z

  • 🤝 3Keel consultants Luke Ryder and James Elliott recently facilitated a workshop at The Growth Hub Cirencester, exploring local nature-based solutions and infrastructure for businesses in and around Cirencester. 🌱 Part of 3Keel's Agriculture & Landscapes team, Luke and James ran the workshop with the Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group and Cirencester Chamber of Commerce. 🌻 Organisations including Cirencester Wildlife Group and Cirencester Town Council attended, as well as Roz Savage MBE, MP for the South Cotswolds. 🌊 With collaboration in mind, the group identified significant problems in the surrounding area and the current barriers to solving them. Issues included: flooding and drainage, road and infrastructure, air pollution, and the 'heat island' effect (where urban areas experience significantly higher temperatures than neighbouring rural areas). ➡️ Crucially, the group proposed ways forward: 🌳 Planting trees and restoring wetlands to mitigate flooding 🛣️ Greening streets and roads with rain gardens, tree pits and roadside tree planting to reduce heat and absorb pollution 🌉 Enabling business-backed investment for upgrades to key infrastructure, such as bridges, waste-water connections and road drainage. 🎯 With an action plan in place, an immediate next step is to map out local environmental risk hotspots for targeted action. Thank you to all who took part, to Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group and the Cirencester Chamber of Commerce, and to Cirencester Growth Hub for hosting the event. #Environment #Farming #NatureBasedSolutions Russell Ashfield | Alison Rickett | Catherine McCosker

♻️ Created to recognise and celebrate the importance that recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet, Global Recycling Day offers a moment to think again about what we throw away – seeing not waste, but opportunity. 🚿 If plastic is what first springs to mind, there's plenty more that also deserves attention. Have you ever wondered, for example, how to capture the valuable nutrients running away down our sewer pipes? 🕵 This is a topic 3Keel has investigated thoroughly in a recent project with the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford. 🌊 The investigation explored how to capture nutrients that routinely go to waste (such as nitrogen and phosphorus), keep them in circulation – and in doing so prevent catastrophic damage to waterways. 🔎 Ultimately the project, covering Leicester and Leicestershire county, came to focus on four key opportunities: 1️⃣ Upstream wastewater solutions 2️⃣ Transformation of digestate 3️⃣ Downstream farming interventions 4️⃣ Nutrient co-location 👩⚖️ The high-level conclusion is that there is a huge opportunity to build circular economy solutions that make efficient use of nutrients and keep them circulating in the food system. This requires a shift in thinking – where some see waste, we need to see valuable resources. 🗑️ As the old saying goes: waste not, want not. We’re proud to share a major milestone in our sustainability journey! Our group carbon reduction targets have now been independently validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Science-based targets give us a clear, measurable path to reducing emissions. This means our commitments are: ✅ Aligned with global carbon reduction ambitions ✅ Covering Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions ✅ Time-bound and measurable—short-term (by 2030), long-term (net-zero by 2050) At Samworth Brothers, we’re committed to doing good things for our planet, and this validation reinforces how seriously we take our sustainability responsibilities. Our science-based targets include: - Overall net-zero commitment: Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain by 2050. - Near-term targets (by 2030): • 42% reduction in absolute Scope 1, 2 & 3 GHG emissions (from a 2022 base year). • 30.3% reduction in absolute Scope 3 FLAG (Forest, Land, and Agriculture) GHG emissions. • No deforestation across primary deforestation-linked commodities by December 2025. - Long-term targets (by 2050): • 90% reduction in absolute Scope 1, 2 & 3 GHG emissions. • 72% reduction in absolute Scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions. A huge thanks to Science Based Targets initiative and 3Keel for your support in reaching this milestone! 💚♻️ #SamworthBrothers #FoodAndFamilySince1896 #WeDoGoodThingsWithGreatFood #ScienceBasedTargets #SBTi Science Based Targets initiative

  • 🔎  This week 3Keel Principal Consultant Samra Mariam and Senior Consultant Rob Kilgour attended Informa Connect's Climate Risk Reporting conference in London, and have shared some early reflections on the evolving disclosure landscape for climate risk and transition plans. 📨  A consistent message that we at 3Keel share with our clients is that companies shouldn’t let perfection be the enemy of the good in developing their climate reporting. It was great to hear this message being reinforced at this year's conference. 📊  The Transition Plan Taskforce framework, for example, is comprehensive and detailed. Tackling it all at once can be daunting. It can certainly be a challenging piece of work, one which requires careful consideration of a company's future, and which draws on resources from teams across the business. 👣  However, for many companies it’s important to recognise that their transition plan will be iterative. Getting started now, and recognising the strategic and commercial value of a transition plan and its potential to evolve, is key. 📻  It's been a thought-provoking conference and interesting to hear reflections from across the finance and corporate sectors. Stay tuned for more key messages and further reflections. #ClimateRisk2025 #ClimateChange #SustainabilityReporting | Dr Alex Hetherington | Richard Sheane | SFR Sustainable Finance & Regulation

3Keel is partnering with AdAstra to improve accuracy of land use change emissions reporting! Today sees the public launch of Orbae, from AdAstra Sustainability. The tool provides high-accuracy land use change emission factors for agricultural commodities worldwide. It's designed to help companies tackle the challenge of reducing emissions from deforestation. We've been impressed by the approach they've taken and are very excited to be a supporter and user. Why does it matter? Addressing deforestation and land conversion is critical if we are going to hit global climate and nature goals. Land conversion makes up an estimated 11% of global GHG emissions, over 75% of which is driven by agriculture. Businesses will struggle to meet science-based targets without drastically reducing land use change emissions in their operations and supply chains. However, quantifying the environmental impact of land conversion is a complex business: it's highly location-specific and will be influenced by a huge variety of commodity sourcing models. The approach to quantifying land use change emissions taken by life cycle assessment and Scope 3 practitioners over the past 20 years was a good start, but it's no longer fit for purpose: we desperately need more location and crop specific data to support credible tracking of land use change emissions. Orbae is the first technology to quantify land conversion impacts at such a global scale and such a granular resolution. Today marks a major milestone for them as they make their data open source in order to drive greater impact. Well done Ad Astra team! You can watch AdAstra's video to see how it works and explore open data at orbae.eco. https://orbae.eco/. If you'd like to learn more about how 3Keel uses Orbae data for clients, please DM me.
