Authentic, engaging moments in #retail design are crucial. The starting point isn’t the technology - it's about the idea. In the new Newcastle United Football Club store the team at 442 Design were tasked with creating #WOW moments that fans would love, talk about and share with others. We wanted to create scale, impact and something personal that helped enhance the #customer journey. In the store planning we reworked the customer flow by introducing a new escalator to the rear of the store to help move customers upstairs to the main Kit Shop. An eye-catching idea was critical to help the flow on busy matchdays. On the rear wall across both floor levels we introduced a high definition digital screen which shows bespoke drone footage over St James Park and wider city views. This creates a unique cinematic birds-eye view as customers travel up the escalator. Above the escalator we had an open void beneath the ceiling – space that has no sales benefit - that we wanted to use to complete the sense of ‘Home’ and create an authentic connection with the fans. We introduced a large scale replica model of the world famous Tyne Bridge to sail overhead paying homage to the town's industrial heritage. When combined with the digital screen it creates an immersive experience that could only be in Newcastle. Memorable and personal. The combination of large format digital, great filmed content and an exceptional metalwork scale model brought that original idea to life. The escalator journey is now time well spent – and the fans love it. Washington Metalworks Lauren Cross Simon Lilley Ryan Robson Sabrina (Brie) C.
