Has hiring for tech contract roles changed? The last couple of years have been tough for the UK’s tech contractor market with less and less roles. We’ve seen record numbers of contractors applying for many positions and some people are choosing to take permanent roles instead. But apart from an increase in the number of applications we receive for each role, the process hasn’t changed. Hiring for contract positions is still a quick process and from beginning to end shouldn’t last longer than 2 weeks. If you’ve recently been looking for a tech contract role, what has the experience been like?

A reminder about some of the steps you can take to make sure you ace your next tech interview ⬇️ Ask about the format – Knowing how the interview(s) will play out will mean you can prep accordingly. Research the role – Making sure you understand where the role fits into the business can help you focus on areas that are most relevant to the role. Review must-have skills – Another way to find the areas to focus on is to review the must-have skills on the job description. Practice questions – A skill like any other, practicing interview questions ahead of your interview helps make sure your confidence levels are high. With the wave of Gen AI we’ve seen over the last few years, there is concern that people will get swept aside. It’s the summer holiday season and with upcoming travel plans and extra childcare responsibilities, job searches can be more challenging. What can you do to help keep the job search ticking along during the summer? 🕒 Ask about timelines – In the early stages of application process, asking about timelines will give you an idea about when interviews might take place. 🔊 Communicate any plans – If you have a holiday booked, be sure to mention it early so you can find gaps that work for everyone. 👩💻 Request a remote interview – If you have commitments that mean you can’t make an in-person interview, it’s worth requesting a remote interview. Most 1st stage interviews are already conducted remotely but it’s good to check. You may still face some delays over the summer period, but being flexible and understanding will give a good impression to the hiring teams.
