We help to accelerate the transition to a net-zero automotive industry through funding, support and insights.

About us

The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) collaborates with UK government, the automotive industry and academia to accelerate the industrialisation of technologies, supporting the transition to deliver net-zero emission vehicles. Since its foundation in 2013, APC has funded 170 low-carbon projects involving 402 partners, working with companies of all sizes, and has helped to create or safeguard nearly 50,000 jobs in the UK. The technologies developed in these projects are projected to save over 288 million tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of removing the lifetime emissions from 12 million cars. With its deep sector expertise and cutting-edge knowledge of new propulsion technologies, APC’s role in building and advising project consortia helps projects start more quickly and deliver increased value. In the longer term, its work to drive innovation and encourage collaboration is building the foundations for a successful and sustainable UK automotive industry. In 2019 the UK government committed the Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) to accelerate the development of a net-zero vehicle supply chain, enabling UK-based manufacturers to serve global markets. ATF investments are awarded through the APC to support strategically important UK capital and R&D investments that will enable companies involved in batteries, motors and drives, power electronics, fuel cells, recycling, and associated supply chains to anchor their future.

  • This week, two of our Technology Trends team members featured as guest lecturers at the University of Birmingham. 🎓 Aditya Thirunavukkarasu and Angad Jessel were invited by the Mechanical Engineering Department to come and talk to students about the automotive engineering sector and the challenges and changes facing it as it looks to a zero-emission future. 🎤 The lecture was entitled ‘Investing in a net-zero automotive future through technology innovations’ and gave students a snapshot of the technology roadmaps for internal combustion engines and hydrogen. The roadmaps were launched last autumn by the APC, on behalf of the Automotive Council UK, and detail technological advancements and changes that are likely to be encountered over the next 15 years to 2040. You can read the roadmaps here: https://okt.to/W0AcKQ or email us to find out more roadmaps@apcuk.co.uk #innovation #automotive #engineering #highereducation #guestlecuturer #zeroemissions

  • Minister of State for Industry Sarah Jones MP said "growth will not come without a fight" at the APC and Zenzic's reception at the House of Commons yesterday, titled: Economic Growth, Innovation and Scale-up in the UK's Automotive Industry. Speaking about the automotive and connected automated mobility (CAM) sectors she was upbeat about the UK's strengths. "The UK is positioned as world leaders; we are setting the agenda, and we have a huge opportunity to develop and grow ahead of our competitors around the world". Hosted by Lord Dominic Johnson, together with members of parliament and industry leaders, this event presented how the automotive sector offers opportunities for innovation, growth and high-value jobs across the UK. Lord Johnson said "we are absolutely united in the core concept, that is turning us into a manufacturer of vehicles for the future". With sights very much set on the future of mobility, invited guests heard an inspirational speech from Oxa's CTO and co-founder Paul Newman, on the role of connected and autonomous vehicles in our transport system. He laid out how CAM will be a transformative "trophic cascade" for society. Ian Constance explained how the APC and Zenzic can support industry to deliver real-world impacts for decarbonisation of transport and capture a nascent CAM market through its government-funded programmes. The room included examples of technology on display from Raeon: a sculpted motorcycle battery IONETIC: VR headset demonstrating software-accelerated battery pack development  Oxford RF: Innovative radar sensors and systems Plus people had a go with a hydrogen-fuelled Lego train and built their own hydrogen cars from Hydrogen Challenge Ltd Thank you for the support of everyone who attended or participated, including organisers Total Politics
