Supporting the UK’s largest network of independent advice services

About us

AdviceUK is the UK's largest support network for free, independent advice centres. We work alongside our members to help individuals and communities to enforce their rights and improve their quality of life, through the provision of social welfare advice. Our member organisations are very diverse both in terms of size and in their ways of working. Some, like National Debtline and Shelter, are large organisations with predominantly paid staff. However, many are small community-based organisations, very often staffed and managed by part-time volunteers. For many AdviceUK members, provision of advice is their core work. However, for a significant minority advice is only one of a range of services provided in the context of their wider activities (for example, housing associations, credit unions, student unions, and women’s refuges). Most of our members work in areas with high levels of deprivation, and over a quarter serve a particular community of interest (for example, BME community groups, estate-based community projects, people with particular health needs or disabilities). AdviceUK has pioneered the use of Vanguard Consulting’s Systems Thinking in the advice sector. From our work we know that advice can help public services learn where and how things go wrong. Commissioning advice to ‘do better things’ could help public bodies improve services and reduce costs. 💔 When Zuweratu’s daughter, Lulu, had a stroke at just five years old, it turned their world upside down. Born with Down’s Syndrome, Lulu already needed special care, but the stroke left her with severe disabilities, making everyday life a battle. Zuweratu faced a daunting task of navigating the complex welfare system to get the support they needed. Zuweratu sought help from the Community Law Service (CLS) who became her lifeline. CLS helped secure housing benefit, fought for the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for Lulu, and ultimately won a high-rate care award after a long legal battle. But the fight didn’t stop there – when the awarded benefits still weren’t paid, CLS stepped in again, determined to see the case through to the very end. This #AdviceWeek, we celebrate the resilience of families like Zuweratu’s and the tireless support provided by advice centres like CLS. Without them, so many disabled children and their families would fall through the cracks. 👏 #AdviceSaves

💬 “Before I reached out for help, I felt overwhelmed and alone. My rent arrears kept growing, and I was threatened with court action. I didn’t know where to turn, and everything seemed to fall apart.” Jane’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and the life-changing impact of advice services. Living with a rare condition that requires weekly chemotherapy, Jane struggled to manage her health and finances after losing her income. On top of that, an admin error stopped her Personal Independence Payment (PIP), leaving her unable to pay bills. That’s when Glasgow’s goConnect Tenancy Sustainment Team at Glen Oaks Housing Association stepped in. Their Financial Adviser acted swiftly to get Jane’s PIP reinstated, clearing her rent arrears and even securing funding for essential items like a new mattress and fridge freezer. ✨ The impact? “My rent arrears were cleared entirely, and I no longer face the threat of court action. Neither me nor my son are as stressed as we were, and I’m finally starting to feel hope again.” This #AdviceWeek, let’s celebrate the power of advice services to support people through the toughest of times. 💙 #AdviceSaves #DisabilitySupport

Our friends at AdviceUK have launched the first ever #AdviceWeek to raise awareness of key challenges faced by advice-giving organisations and call for policy change to support the advice sector. Law Centres are facing the same challenges as Advice UK’s members, which includes impossibly high demand for their services, financial instability, and difficulty recruiting and retaining staff. Across Advice Week, we’ll be highlighting the many ways that #AdviceSaves, be it saving people’s homes and livelihoods, or saving huge sums for public services and the taxpayer. The work of our sector can no longer be taken for granted. We need sustainable funding; we need change. Let’s start by highlighting the greatest bugbear of all: the mess that is #LegalAid. Here’s your latest reminder that civil legal aid lawyers haven’t had a pay rise for 28 years. As ever, if you wish to give us a leg up, please consider donating. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ephEQK-4

    • A title which reads:
The change we need for legal aid

A bulleted list which reads:
•Make work pay: our legal aid system should not collapse simply because no provider can afford to deliver it. Fair pay - viable work!
•Back good work to support communities: invest in training more social welfare lawyers, to tackle poverty and disadvantage
•Remove barriers to opportunity: help people overcome problems and get support with legal aid for all benefits, housing and debt issues
•Keep justice affordable: update legal aid’s means threshold and keep uprating it with inflation. No-one should be priced out of justice
•End legal aid ‘deserts’: do more to ensure that people in need can access local assistance wherever they are in the country
