The Future of Air Force Fleets

About us

For generations, Air Forces have faced the challenge of operating an ever-growing mix of single point aircraft designs. Each brings its own logistic support, management and training burden. Each locks the military into a single point design for a generation. Operational flexibility is limited. Change is expensive. Until now. The AERALIS system will reshape air forces with new levels of integration, configurability and sustainability, and deliver significant opportunities for UK aerospace and manufacturing. The AERALIS system creates a range of optimised configurations for established tactical and training roles, each one formed around the same Common Core Fuselage and Intelligent Integration of digital systems and avionics. All AERALIS configurations have 85% commonality of parts. Air forces can rationalise their fleets with no loss of capability, while enjoying an increase in their strategic options through the inherent flexibility of a modular system. IT WAS with warm hearts (and hot necks) that the team welcomed home our stunning full-scale Phoenix Common Core Fuselage (CCF) engineering demonstrator to the AERALIS headquarters in Bristol last week. The Phoenix demonstrator left the scorching heat of Doha, Qatar four weeks ago on a ship bound for the scorching heat of…Aztec West. Although the summer sun was welcome, it did give the team a proper roasting as they nursed the precious cargo from trailer to the AERALIS hangar. Kane Marshall, AERALIS Assembly Director, who oversaw Phoenix’s manufacture and shipping to and from the DIMDEX defence show in Qatar, commented: “It’s great to have it back. It’s been a real team effort to develop our first, real Core Fuselage, get it built, shipped to a key defence event, return it, unloaded and unpacked safely. Phoenix has fared really well in transit – she’s looking great.” The Phoenix demonstrator was built to showcase the design maturity of the CCF – the engineering and digital heart of the AERALIS modular air system, which enables true spiral development and rapid configuration for a broad range of air missions all supported by end-to-end digital certification. With a DAL-A software driven reconfigurable cockpit display, it also gave international visitors to DIMDEX their first impression of how AERALIS platforms can be configured to train for a range of different front-line types whilst giving both pilot and instructor the best ergonomics and field of view of any trainer on the market today. Phoenix will remain at the AERALIS offices for now to be used for upcoming customer, programme partner and STEM engagements that we look forward to reporting on soon. Thanks to Kane and the rest of the team for your sterling work in the heat! #AERALIS #Phoenix #UKDefence #Pyramid #UKAerospace

As we approach Armed Forces Day this coming Saturday, we wanted to share some personal reflections from ex-Forces members of the AERALIS team. Without doubt, Armed Forces veterans have made AERALIS what it is today – not just a pioneering, innovative proposition to defence aerospace and digital engineering, but an acutely relevant solution for the challenges of modern air forces; available, affordable, adaptable capability. Their insights, wisdom and extraordinary depth of experience have been instrumental in ensuring AERALIS can meet the needs of, and shape, future air force fleets and how they operate. The training and operational needs of Royal Air Force crews are at the heart of AERALIS’s mission, and the dedication of our serving men, women and cadets, continues to inspire us. Please read on to hear from just a few of the veterans on the AERALIS team: David Townsend ChPP CEng FAPM FIET “Serving as a Royal Naval Officer has been an immense honour and privilege. Throughout my tenure with the Armed Forces, I witnessed firsthand the unwavering dedication, resilience, and camaraderie that define military service. This experience instilled in me a profound sense of duty and commitment to protecting our nation's values and interests. The service life has not only shaped me as a leader but also enriched my understanding of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform. It’s a journey that has made me the person I am proud to be today.”   Archie Neill BSc FRAeS “It was an honour to serve as a Royal Air Force officer and an extreme privilege to work as a fighter pilot, instructor and display pilot in a variety of operational and domestic arenas. However, my lasting memories are of the extraordinary people I was lucky enough to operate alongside. High degrees of trust and teamwork, particularly in many high-stakes environments, created a culture of accountability, mutual respect and a joint sense of purpose - ensuring effective performance and safety throughout the whole organisation. It was also tremendous fun.” Matt Powlson “The variety, responsibilities and challenges throughout my 20 years as an Engineering Officer were enormously rewarding - both personally and technically. The camaraderie, teamwork and professionalism of everyone with whom it was my privilege to serve was exemplary.” Simon Chelton “Serving in the Armed Forces was a privilege and an honour, both to contribute to the country’s safety and to have the professional rewards that come when working with highly skilled and motivated personnel who regularly put the interests of their colleagues and their country above their own. For me, serving in ships and submarines was a joy and my later career, mainly ashore, also gave me great satisfaction.” #ArmedForcesDay2024 #AERALIS #Appreciation

𝗔 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 AERALIS’s Tristans, Crawford and Dale, were in Paris this week for the 2024 Eurosatory show, a global exhibition and conference for the defence and security sectors. Now in its 55th year, the show defines its purpose as: “Inventing responsible Defence and Security for the world of tomorrow”. That balance is perhaps more nuanced and complex than ever before, with the ever-present rollercoaster of geopolitical relations now considered alongside, and in context with, increasingly pressing climate challenges. Tristan Dale, AERALIS’s Head of Integrated Campaign, commented: “There was a clear consensus across this year’s show; Europe must bolster its collaborative efforts to tackle the rapidly evolving defence landscape. Companies and nations are increasingly aligning their policies and innovation strategies to build resilience and enhance warfighting capability. “The need for enterprise-level collaboration and military interoperability were predominant themes. Nations are focusing on seamlessly integrating their military capabilities, while companies like AERALIS are fostering partnerships to innovate and deliver efficient, sustainable solutions.” Of course, these challenges are not news; AERALIS was founded to address these very same needs six years ago, with an emphasis on digital engineering and open systems modularity from the start to ensure an adaptable and cost-effective capability for future air forces, while opening ways for them to reduce environmental impact as well. As Dale continued: “As defence budgets rise, meeting these challenges requires fresh commercial approaches and the forging of strong, dynamic – and courageous - alliances. Eurosatory was an important opportunity for us to engage with partners and demonstrate our commitment to a resilient and innovative European defence sector.” #defence #Eurosatory2024

AERALIS was very pleased to host the fourth session of this year’s engagement with the University of Bristol’s mentoring scheme last week at our Aztec West headquarters. AERALIS joined the University’s scheme in 2022, providing mentoring to first year Engineering and Computer Science undergraduates. Mentees and mentors alike greatly enjoyed and benefited from the experience, and the relationship has continued. For this year’s final session, the students were able to get up close to our full-scale aircraft model and see some of the digital design engineering that AERALIS is pioneering. Our involvement in the mentoring scheme is part of a wider commitment to developing opportunities for young people to experience the aerospace sector. Having said that, mentoring isn’t just beneficial for the mentees. Research published by the Harvard Business Review showed that mentors feel an enhanced sense of meaningfulness from their work, which is demonstrably true in our experience, as AERALIS Programme Director, Colin Thornton, who led last week’s session alludes: “I’ve found it hugely rewarding to spend time with my mentees. They have continued to challenge me with interesting questions, and I hope in some way I have helped them to plot their own course into engineering as a career.” #Mentoring #Defence #UniversityofBristol
