Aerospace Centre of Excellence

I am excited to share that, over the past week, I participated in the 2nd International Workshop on AI for Space Safety and Sustainability held at the Royal Astronomical Society in London and organized by the Institute on AI for Space Sustainability. I presented my research on enabling privacy preserving AI for data and neural network models, as well as characterizing the space objects behavior (bus, attitude, attitude rate) through light curves analysis. It was also exciting to attend the presentations of the other members of the institutes and to be involved in the cutting-edge research on space safety and sustainability. I would like to thank all my colleagues, especially Prof. Roberto Furfaro and Dr. Boris Benedikter for their valuable contribution and support, and Prof. Massimiliano Vasile, PI of the Institute. Third day of the 2nd workshop on #AI for #Space #Sustainability. Today it was all about skill development and training. The second journal paper of my PhD is now available in Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics! In this work we propose a fully-vision-based navigation algorithm which relies on Convolutional Neural Networks-based Image Processing around the binary asteroid system Didymos. It has been a great pleasure to attend the hashtag #IAC2024 last week. I had the opportunity to present two projects of my Ph.D., the first one carried at #GMV and the second one carried in my living room. The first one is "Hardware-In-The-Loop Test of a CNN-based Image Processing algorithm for autonomous visual-based navigation applied to the Hera mission" and the second one is "Robustness analysis of data driven image processing methods for autonomous navigation with application to the Hera mission". As a recipient of the ESA Academy International Student Education Board (ISEB), I received a scholarship to attend SGC (hosted by the Space Generation Advisory Council) and IAC2024. The past two weeks were eventful; the first week entailed an intense 3-day workshop and nightly engaging activities for students and young professionals. Followed by the last week of technical presentations, plenary sessions and many discussions around sustainability for space. Space is not only accessible to those with specialised skills but to all who are interested in space; many diverse skills are required, including those from small and developing countries. You have no idea how much your ideas can contribute to the future of space and the steps you can take to initiate the preservation of your home. As a part of ESA Academy ISEB, we were tasked to gain points in reaching the moon; it was quite an interesting concept that triggered a lot of engagement with teams and the development of new ideas and interesting conversations. Growing up, space seemed so distant, but today, I'm really pleased to have had the opportunity to have these experiences that will last a lifetime.
