We are working to achieve a peaceful and thriving Afghanistan.

About us

Afghanaid is a British humanitarian and development organisation. For 40 years, our dedicated staff have worked with millions of vulnerable families in some of the underserved and most remote communities in Afghanistan. We build basic services, improve livelihoods, strengthen the rights of women and children, help communities protect against natural disasters, and respond to humanitarian emergencies. Our community-led approach gives ordinary Afghans a voice in their own development, making them active participants in shaping the future of their country. With our years of experience, our majority Afghan team, and our deep understanding of local, cultural and ethnic issues, we have earned great trust and respect among the communities we serve. This has allowed us to gain access to some of the most hard to reach areas of the country. Our Vision: A peaceful and thriving Afghanistan. Our Mission: To provide Afghans with the training and tools they need to help themselves, their families and their communities. Our Focus: We particularly target vulnerable households – including those headed by women, or with elderly, chronically ill or disabled family members. Afghanaid employs around 700 staff, over 95% of whom are Afghan and more than a third of whom are women. We are headquartered in Kabul with provincial offices in our programme areas. We also have a small fundraising and donor liaison office in London.

Poverty isn't just a matter of lacking money or resources—it affects every aspect of life, and has a devastating impact on Afghan communities. Currently affecting one in two Afghans, poverty fuels hunger, ill health, and displacement, while worsening the impacts of climate change and restrictions on women and girls. Many impoverished communities also lack access to basic services, making it difficult to break the cycle of poverty. At its core, our work focuses on addressing poverty and its many impacts, while also tackling the external forces that drive instability and hardship. Whether through emergency assistance, supplying food, shelter and cash assistance to those who need it most, or through longer-term initiatives, supporting men and women to earn an income and protect their families against economic and climatic shocks, every project we implement supports Afghans to build a stronger, more resilient future. Today is #WorldFoodDay, a crucial moment to remember the ongoing food insecurity crisis in #Afghanistan, where over 12 million people face hunger daily—a number only set to rise as winter approaches. Economic hardship, severe droughts, natural and climate change-induced disasters, and restrictions on women and girls have all fuelled food insecurity across the country. Currently, more than 3.9 million people are experiencing acute malnourishment, including 2.8 million children under the age of 5. 🔗 Discover more about the root causes of hunger in Afghanistan and how, with your support, we’re working to address them: https://bit.ly/4cUkanr

On this #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen, we honour the resilience of rural Afghan women, who play a crucial role in tackling poverty, hunger, and climate change. 🌍🌾 Despite countless challenges, these women are the backbone of Afghanistan's agricultural economy and of remote communities—growing food, rearing livestock, and caring for their families, all while safeguarding their communities, adapting to climate impacts, and preserving ancestral knowledge of the land. 🌱 Their leadership, strength, and wisdom are essential for building a sustainable future for Afghanistan. Support us in amplifying their voices and providing them with the training and tools they need to build a brighter future today: https://bit.ly/3XANTxu 💚

Today is the International Day for #DisasterRiskReduction, an important day to highlight the importance of implementing strategies to decrease the impacts of disasters on at-risk communities. This year’s theme, 'Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future', highlights the unmistakable connection between disasters and inequality. In countries like #Afghanistan, where communities are already facing extreme challenges, the impact of disasters—whether earthquakes, floods, or droughts—hits hardest on those least able to recover, and exacerbates the already stark impacts of poverty, food insecurity and gender inequality. And in countries like Afghanistan, where the climate crisis is fuelling increased instances of droughts and floods, it has never been more vital to reduce disaster risk and protect communities. Across Afghanistan, we implement disaster-risk reduction initiatives alongside communities. By decreasing these risks, the people we work with are able to build stronger, safer, and more resilient futures. 👉🏽Learn more: https://bit.ly/4e4lGoA

On this #WorldMentalHealthDay, let's shine a much needed spotlight on the health and wellbeing of Afghan women, whose mental health has been significantly eroded by years of continuous conflict, immensely challenging humanitarian crises, and deepening restrictions on their rights. A sobering 82% of Afghan women report worsening feelings of anxiety, isolation and depression in 2024. We cannot let the women and girls of #Afghanistan be forgotten. This year's World Habitat Day falls on a particularly poignant anniversary. Last year, on October 7th, the first of a series of devastating earthquakes struck Afghanistan’s Herat province, which led to 1,500 people losing their lives, and over 38,000 homes being destroyed or damaged. 🏘️ World Habitat Day calls upon us all to recognise and uphold the basic right of all to adequate shelter. In Afghanistan, disasters like earthquakes and flash floods hit the hardest in communities already struggling with poverty and exclusion, leaving many vulnerable families displaced and without a place to call home. 💪🏽Thanks to your incredible support last year, we were able to provide emergency cash to those affected in Herat, helping them secure shelter and essential supplies. 💚 Discover the impact of your generosity: https://bit.ly/3VGbP1V
