We're a charity working to create a society where everyone enjoys later life.
About us
The Centre for Ageing Better is pioneering ways to make ageing better a reality for everyone, including challenging ageism and building an Age-friendly Movement, creating Age-friendly Employment and Age-friendly Homes. The UK’s population is undergoing a massive age shift. In less than 20 years, one in four people will be over 65. The fact that many of us are living longer is a great achievement. But unless radical action is taken by government, business and others in society, millions of us risk missing out on enjoying those extra years. We are a charitable foundation, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, and part of the Government’s What Works Network.

A shocking 2.6 million people aged 55 and over live in a non-decent home, and 54% of this group have a long-term health condition. Our latest spotlight report highlights the serious health consequences unsafe and poor-quality homes have for millions of people in Britain today. What can we do about this? We are campaigning for #SafeHomesNow, a national campaign to fix unsafe homes. We are calling on the UK government to fix this hidden housing crisis What are some of our recommendations? We need a cross-departmental national strategy to fix unsafe homes and improve England’s housing stock, recognising the link between housing and health. This strategy should address inequalities in housing standards. Want to find out more? In this first Safe Homes Now spotlight by The Centre for Ageing Better and Independent Age, we look at the impact of poor-quality housing on older people. Older people are particularly vulnerable to the health consequences of unsafe homes and there are a growing number of older renters who need strengthened rights and support.
