On Wednesday 21st February hundreds of people were forced out of their homes in Plymouth after a suspected unexploded World War Two bomb was found in a back garden. A 200m (656ft) cordon was put in place - and a major incident declared - after the device was found at the property on St Michael Avenue, Keyham. AJM were asked by the commissioner if we could provide any wheelchair support for the people affected by the situation here in Plymouth. We provided 3 adult wheelchairs, 1 x self-propelled and 2 x attendant propelled and 3 cushions to the life centre to help support the cause. From the initial contact request to delivery of chairs to the support centre the time frame was one hour. We received a thank you from the Senior Commissioner: “Just wanted to formally express my thanks to you and the wider AJM team for your swift and invaluable help yesterday. As you know the situation in Plymouth remains very complex, with over 3,000 people having been evacuated from the homes with many of them using the Life Centre as a temporary refuge. From the initial request to the wheelchairs being delivered to the site took less than an hour, which was incredible service and thankfully appreciated by the team onsite. Thanks again for your continued commitment, professionalism, and care.” The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team will carefully remove the device from the property. The bomb will be disposed of at sea, beyond the breakwater. Well done to all the staff in Plymouth for their speedy response in what must be a very strange and scary situation.

Our NHS wheelchair services are open throughout the Christmas period. Our sites are closed over bank holidays, but our emergency phone lines will be covered, and our field service engineers will also be on call for emergencies.
