Angel Investor | Supporting Female Founders | Co-Founder of Flo Health

People Often Ask Me Why I Invest in Female Founders - Here’s Why 🌟 One simple reason: women have unique superpowers that give them an edge in business. One of the strongest advantages is their keen understanding of the consumer market. Women control a substantial portion of consumer spending. In the U.S. alone, women are responsible for approximately 80% of consumer spending - an incredible $14 trillion annually. Globally, this number rises to $35 trillion. Women influence or control 85% of all consumer purchases across key categories like healthcare, vacations, new homes, food, and beauty. In these areas, women are often far more discerning consumers than men, understanding both the value and emotional impact of a purchase. Famed investor Peter Lynch recognized this, too. When managing the Fidelity Magellan Fund, he relied on insights from his wife, Carolyn Lynch, and daughters to help him identify great opportunities. Lynch’s philosophy of “investing in what you know” underscores this value: looking for investments in the products and services we, or those around us, use regularly. So, to all the women out there: you’re not just shopping - you’re researching the market! Your insight is a powerhouse for innovation and growth. This is why I believe in the potential of women-led startups. More to read in the links in the comments. 👇 #WomenInBusiness #FemaleFounders #WomenEmpowerment #InvestingInWomen

Strategic Growth | M&A Execution | ClimateTech | Future of Work | Impact Investor

I was inspired at the Concave Climate Action and Social Justice for a Net Positive Future event last week that brought together a great line-up of speakers - starting with insights on what policy advisors from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, case studies from innovators like Celia Francis, co-Founder of Ponterra who is leveraging partnerships with corporates to unlock commercial financing for biodiversity restoration with the expectation of returns in the range of 15 - 20% IRR, through to panels on the mixed capital stack needed to fund and scale ClimateTech to achieve impact.   My key take-aways from the event on what more is needed: 🔹 A more agile regulatory system to support continued growth and scaling of CleanTech, including the right incentives to spur innovation (and to fully pricing in the costs of carbon intensive products so that pricing is comparable between green and non-green products) 🔹 Global collaboration to promote effective carbon and biodiversity credit markets - which likely requires governments, private companies and other stakeholders across borders to work together 🔹 A recognition that data, measurement, reporting and verification is important but it isn't the end goal, so we shouldn't let 'perfect' measurement get in the way of 'good enough', it should be used as a mechanism to instil trust and show progress 🔹 With record amounts of early stage funding going into CleanTech both in the UK (reaching £2.6B in ‘23) and globally (reaching $50B in ‘23 and $70B in ‘22), we now need to see corporates get more actively involved to a) inject capital in these innovative companies / technologies via partnerships, purchase agreements and / or M&A to help them reach enterprise scale; b) enable corporates to put de-risked technology into their everyday processes / businesses to start seeing the impact these scaled technologies can have; c) be a catalysts for corporate transformation and more sustainable holistic corporate operations that lead to a Net Zero world for us all. 🔹 The importance of reserve capital, particularly with First-of-a-Kind type projects - we don't know what we don't know and having capital reserves to support unexpected scaling challenges is critical to de-risking and ultimately achieving enterprise scale operations with these new technologies. Big shout out to Sarah Angold for doing a great job as MC for the day with humour, style and intellect! Thank you to all the amazing panelists for their hard work to achieve climate impact and pausing to share their work and views with a wider group. Almas in Birmingham for Tech Week 👏

How lucky am I? Started my day with an amazing keynote from Claire Downes at Women in Tech event today! Not only did she talk about her incredible experience in the film industry (writer and producer behind #TheJobLot which I'm gonna re-watch with different eyes now 😂) but also about the work she does with Virtual Decisions. And boy, is she doing something great! Look forward to see how we can connect her to friends and partners in the States ✨ Plus catching up over lunch with the lovely Roxane Sanguinetti of Alma Angels, fabulous friend, former client and fantastic woman in tech promoting an inclusion and diversity agenda in investment! Sitting on the panel moderated by the fantastic Tara Attfield-Tomes, Roxane had the question of: how do we bring the stats of "only 2% (which is actually 1.8%) of women get funding" in to double digits? One key takeaway: "more collab between female founders and female investors; if you're a female founder who's gotten investment refer another female founder" 🙋♀️ Yup, makes sense! Today has been a great day! And it's not even finished yet... #TechWeek #TechWeek2024 #WomenInTech

👼 Last week we brought an amazing panel of angels together to talk the #RadiaAccelerator cohort through raising from angel investors. Thank you Edwina Johnson, Matthew Roberts and Roxane Sanguinetti for sharing your insights, tips and tricks.   📌 Here are some of the key points we touched on during the panel discussion:   💍 Will you be my angel? -Create a spreadsheet with your industry heroes and reach out to them. Even if they don't end up investing, they can still open a door to someone else, become an advisor or even a chair. -If the person has never angel invested before, it is still worth asking if they would invest in your business. -You can also look at similar companies' cap tables to identify potential angels interested in the space (that being said, you don't want angels that are invested in a competitor). -Syndicates like Alma Angels find their deals through community members or founders can apply directly. Nodes Ventures similarly relies on their community bringing deals.   🧠 Is gutfeel the angel DD? -Angel communities and syndicates will collectively look at deals. These groups typically consist of a mix of experts in different industries and fields, meaning they can 'crowdsource' a view on a market quickly. -But back to the gut, most angels will only invest if they believe in the founder. Relationship building is key. -However, don't let angels take up too much of your time. Time should match the check size and/or value add. -To save yourself answering the same questions over and over again, create a bank of FAQs.   💸 Investment terms & valuation -For angel-only rounds, terms are typically set by the largest investors or the most experienced angel. -It's important to think about equity runway when setting your valuation, i.e. thinking about future funding rounds. -SAFEs are a very founder friendly way of not setting your valuation at pre-seed, however be careful with 'stacking' them up.    🛠 Cap table construct -Diversity on the cap table is key, both in terms of representation and investor incentives (i.e. a fund will have very different incentives from a strategic angel). -Invite potential customers or design partners to be an angel investor. -Be wary of 'party rounds' - where all angels have similar ownership and not much skin in the game.   🔥 Any angels out there who have more burning tips for our Radia founders? 🌱 Anna Torrents Saldo, Lydia Taranilla, Beth G., Ebony C., Emily Pilsworth, Jessica Liew, Sungjung Kim, Krupa Modi, CFA, Marta Grzeskiewicz, Philippa Dunjay, Polina Kyriushko, Roma S., Tara Ramdonee, Tara Sakhuja, Julie Gabriel, Ines Clark cc Katya Pogudina, Lauren Apostolidis - AlbionVC and Deepali Nangia -Speedinvest

Founder & CEO Movetru | TEDx Speaker | Top 40 Women TechEU | Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellow & Leaders Scholar | Women in Innovation 21/22 | 1st Class MEng Product Design Engineering | Dance Instructor

Summer recap ⏮️ In June, I had the pleasure of attending the Alma Angels Summit in London. The Alma Angels have created a diverse, inclusive community committed to backing female founders within the tech space. With four outstanding angel investors in Movetru® from the Alma community, it was great connecting in person. Later I attended the The ERA Foundation Annual Dinner thanks to Andrew Everett. I received the ERA Foundation Fellowship in 2022 and it was wonderful to be welcomed back with over 100 guests for a lovely evening of insightful conversations. In July I returned to the US. I started in the San Francisco Bay Area visiting our superstar advisor Marilou McFarlane 🚀 Next stop SEICon in Las Vegas. This event brought together industry leaders from all over the world and showcased the latest innovations transforming the sporting and entertainment world. For our second year we attended the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Summit @ The Sanctuary in Spain! This event brought together some of the most renowned experts, athletes, and decision-makers in the sports tech industry. The opportunity to demonstrate Movetru’s capabilities to drive real-time data insights to attendees was phenomenal. I was so pleased to gain positive feedback and see the excitement Movetru is generating within the industry.   Summer went by so quick - I can’t wait to share the exciting things we have coming up this season!
