🐺 Wolf Awareness Week, celebrated from 22 to 28 October, offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the vital role these magnificent predators play in our ecosystem. The time to make our voices heard in favour of this extraordinary animal is now. 📣 Together with the European Environmental Bureau and 300 other organisations, we are calling on EU Member States to strengthen, rather than weaken, the protection of wolves. This coalition opposes the European Commission's proposal, already approved by the EU Council to reduce the level of protection of wolves under the Bern Convention. 👉 Instead, greater efforts are required to promote coexistence with large carnivores through preventive measures that would allow us to protect the results achieved in wolf conservation, the result of several decades of work. You may not realise it, but the climate crisis is making our cities less liveable and increasing inequality. According to a recent study by the World Resources Institute (WRI)*, the climate crisis will have severe impacts on low-income individuals. 🌡 If no action is taken, temperatures could rise by more than 3°C by 2100, exposing some 600 million people to flooding and worsening access to food and health services. 👉 Some cities, like Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil are already working to address this crisis, with a focus on green spaces, waste management and disease control. Greater efforts are needed globally to reduce emissions and finance adaptation strategies, particularly in the most exposed areas. The climate crisis is not only an environmental issue, but also a social issue. 🌧 Violent floods hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil in May, causing dozens of deaths and hundreds of thousands people to be displaced. Even now, months later, the area still bears the wounds left by the fury of the waters. 🐱 🐶 This environmental disaster has not only affected humans: the Fondazione Capellino has decided to help cats and dogs in difficulty by donating an entire truck of food (approx 5 tons). 🚛 The donation was accompanied by Fondazione Capellino's representative in Brazil, Eurico Toledo, to witness and verify what was done with the collaboration of the local association GRAD BRASIL. 🌊 We've achieved an incredible increase of +500% in Marine Protected Areas in Sardina in just two years! Drought is causing food shortages across southern Africa, affecting 68 million people 🌍 and leading governments to take extreme measures. Namibia and Zimbabwe plan to cull over 700 animals in Namibia and 200 elephants 🐘 in Zimbabwe to feed communities suffering from hunger. This approach raises concerns about its impact on wildlife, biodiversity 🌿, and ecosystems. Culling elephants, hippos 🦛, and zebras 🦓 threatens ecological balance. Experts argue it’s a short-sighted solution that could undermine conservation efforts with long-term consequences. In Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, where elephant populations exceed capacity, the government sees culling as necessary to reduce competition for food and water. However, killing species like elephants destabilises ecosystems, affecting other wildlife. While the El Niño-driven drought has devastated crops 🌾, conservationists believe there are more sustainable alternatives. Rivers create diverse habitats for fish 🐟, amphibians 🐸, birds 🦅, and mammals 🦦, offering food, shelter, and breeding grounds. Beyond providing habitats, rivers help maintain biodiversity, playing a crucial role in climate control. Protecting rivers is critical.
