Already deprived of food by the devastation trawler fishing wreaks on ocean ecosystems, new research by British Antarctic Survey indicates at least 44,000 seabirds, including some of the world's most endangered species, are caught as trawler bycatch every year. The study found simple measures such as deploying a "bird scare line" or not throwing fish guts overboard, decreased bird deaths, but were rarely used. Perhaps this lack of concern for animal welfare is unsurprising in an industry where concern for human welfare is similarly lacking - with a recent article by The Pew Charitable Trusts raising that 100,000 people a year are killed while fishing. #marineconservation Blue Marine Foundation BirdLife Europe and Central Asia Uzair Aftab Oceana UK Daniel Steadman OCEANS ALIVE CONSERVATION TRUST OUR OCEANS • OUR FUTURE Hugo Tagholm Luke McMillan Dr. Francesca Ginley (Bevan) Sarenta King

🚨 Over recent centuries we have lost large areas of the habitats that make up the seascape; including up to 92% per cent of seagrass meadows, 85% of saltmarsh habitats and 95% of native oyster reefs. This severe loss has left our coastal ecosystems fragmented and vulnerable to further degradation. To deliver a thriving healthy ocean, we need to apply the concept of landscape ecology, which has taken off across terrestrial restoration initiatives, and apply it to the nascent field of seascape scale restoration within our coastal habitats. Our new report, “Restoring our Seascapes: evidence and actions for coastal habitat restoration at scale” presents a series of recommendations to enable and accelerate whole scale seascape restoration and follows findings from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) symposium on ‘Ecological connectivity across temperate coastal habitats’ and is written in collaboration with the UK UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), University of Essex, University of Portsmouth and Zoological Society of London (ZSL). The time to restore Britain's 12,500km of coastline and support our marine environments to thrive once more is now Read the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTCGDyda Discover our three policy recommendations 👇 Thanks to Platform Earth for supporting this report. #Restoration #MarineRestoration #Policy #Seascape #NatureRecovery Aisling McGarrigle, Jennifer Murray, Dan Crockett, Prof Joanne Preston, Angus Garbutt, Graham J C Underwood

Estimates show that over half of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) depends on nature. How can we use finance to help tackle the sharp declines in biodiversity across the world and build a resilient future for people and the planet? 🌎 In collaboration with Plan Vivo Foundation and goodcarbon we’re pleased to launch a new report ‘Credit where Credit’s Due: Identifying the Core Principles of a High-Integrity Biodiversity Market.’ The report identifies three core principles for financing crucial nature protection and restoration initiatives, also known as a ‘High Integrity Biodiversity Market’: 1️⃣ Clear communication on the biodiversity assessment methodology and outcomes 2️⃣ Integrated community engagement and participation 3️⃣ Fair and equitable pricing. To reverse nature loss by the global target of 2030, companies we need to spend an estimated $600-800 billion, annually. The emerging biodiversity credit market offers us onea way to achieve restoration and protection of nature at scale and requires building a market based on trust and integrity and include transparent, robust and equitable projects. Read the full report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKc_wzv9 About the Survey: In December 2023, Blue Marine, Plan Vivo Foundation and GoodCarbon led a market survey aimed at establishing the private sector’s level of interest and understanding of the emerging biodiversity credit market. The survey revealed companies' motivations to purchase biodiversity credits, important attributes within a credit and drivers behind incentive to pay more for credits. Are you an educator looking to bring the ocean into the classroom? 🧑🏫 In collaboration with Encounter Edu as part of the Convex Seascape Survey project we are pleased to share three new curriculum-aligned units covering a range of ocean topics. Check out the resources here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gAy-67XF ExeterMarine, Convex Seascape Survey, Convex Insurance, Victoria Turner, Earth Minutes #OceanLiteracy #OceanEducation #Education #Teaching
We're proud to present three new curriculum-aligned units developed in collaboration with Convex Seascape Survey and world-leading scientists from ExeterMarine. Ocean & Climate for KS3 Science and Geography, and Ocean Heroes for KS2 offer comprehensive, engaging, and free resources for teaching essential aspects of ocean science, climate change, and sustainability. Ocean Heroes | Ages 7-11 / KS2 | Cross-curricular is a primary-level unit that introduces ocean and sustainability topics, emphasising blue carbon habitats' importance and how the ocean can be an ally in tackling climate change. Ocean & Climate |Ages 11-14 / KS3 | Science is a lower-secondary unit that covers vital topics such as the carbon cycle, ocean biodiversity, climate change impacts, and ocean acidification, enhancing students' understanding and science capital. Ocean & Climate | Ages 11-14 / KS3 | Geography explores ocean and climate change connections, the role of blue carbon habitats, and the ocean's potential as a climate ally. It covers a range of human and physical geography topics and introduces the concept of ecosystem services. All these lessons can be downloaded from https://lnkd.in/gAy-67XF. As the ocean absorbs over 25% of manmade carbon emissions and 90% of excess heat from global warming, it's crucial to equip students with knowledge about these topics and learn how the ocean is affected by climate change and can be a source of hope in tackling the issue. Our response through these resources balances addressing climate and ocean crises with robust science, climate optimism, and tools for young people to advocate for greater change. These resources are part of our work to bring the science of the Convex Seascape Survey to classrooms internationally, working in partnership with Convex Insurance, Blue Marine Foundation, and the University of Exeter. #ConvexSeascapeSurvey #ExeterMarine #ClimateChangeEducation #ClimateOptimism #YouthAdvocacy

🦈 Happy Shark Awareness Day! Sharks help keep our oceans healthy. At the top of the food chain, sharks are critical for balancing the health of our marine environment and ocean. They help remove weak and sick fish, which helps keep the ecosystem in balance. Sharks are among the most endangered of all marine species globally. It is estimated that since 1970, oceanic shark and ray populations worldwide have declined by 71% and one third of all shark species are now threatened by extinction. ❌ Sharks help boost the economy, balance the ecosystem and maintain the health of our oceans. Find out how they support people 👇 #SharkAwarenessDay #Sharks #elasmobranch
