Enhancing Whisky Production with Custom Filtration Solutions🥃 – an Amazon Filters case study.
I’m excited to share a fascinating project we undertook to improve the whisky production process. As you may or may not know, charred oak barrels are essential for developing the complex flavours in distilled whisky. However, they also release small particles of charred wood into the whisky during maturation, which need to be removed before bottling.
A distillery we partnered with faced challenges with premature blockage of their large format pleated polypropylene filters, leading to increased operational costs and frequent filter changes. Our goal was to develop a filtration solution that would prevent these blockages and optimize the process.
The Problem:
Charred barrels, while enhancing flavour, release small wood particles into the whisky. These particles caused premature blockages in the distillery’s filters, varying by whisky type and barrel used. Our task was to design a filter that could handle these particles more efficiently.
Our Solution:
Using pleated depth filters, we aimed to distribute the particulate loading evenly throughout the filtration media. We dissected used filters to analyse blockage points and customised the structure for optimal performance. By adjusting the efficiency of each filtration layer, we improved dirt holding capacity while maintaining flow rates.
Our standard 10-micron SupaPleat HFC filter initially showed preferential removal on the first upstream layer. After analysing this and the competitive filters, we developed a more open and thicker upstream layer. This resulted in even removal across the layers, increasing throughput by 20-30% while maintaining flow rates.
The customised Amazon SupaPleat HFC filter utilized three filtration layers instead of four, ensuring better pleat separation and preventing premature blockage. This not only maintained the same filtration area as competitive cartridges but also enhanced processing efficiency.
Key Takeaways:
✅Dissecting filters helps understand blockage profiles.
✅Filtration efficiency of individual layers is critical for maximizing dirt holding capacity and on-stream life.
✅Customising standard filters to improve processing efficiency for liquids with varying particle distributions showcases our strength as a filter manufacturer.
This project has reinforced the importance of innovative solutions in traditional industries. If you’re facing similar challenges or looking to optimize your filtration process, we’d love to help🙌
