🥳 Congratulations to Diana Filimon MIET AMIMechE for winning the ‘Guess the Value of Data’ competition at #JLRDataFest2024 last week. 🥳 If you're sick of trying to guess the value of your own data, get in touch...

🎉 Delighted to announce the winner of our ‘Guess the Value of Data’ competition from last week’s #JLRDataFest 2024! Drumroll, please… 🥁 Congratulations to Diana Filimon! A £100 Virgin Experience Day voucher is on its way to you 🎁. Diana’s winning estimate was spot on, correctly valuing the data of FTSE 350 automotive companies at £6bn—around 18% of their aggregate value. We had two other accurate guesses from Amruta Barawade and Ryan Brown, so we went to a lucky dip to determine the winner—congratulations to Diana! Interestingly, data contributes between 13-31% of an organisation’s total value across various industries. This reinforces the importance of treating data as a true asset. By valuing data, organisations gain the confidence to invest in data-driven initiatives and see measurable ROI. Thank you to all who participated! If you’re interested in learning more, check out our full data valuation report - link in comments.

"Future investment in physical assets is driven by the value and benefits they provide. Data should be treated no differently".    Professor Andy Neely and Thomas Coleman, MSc CGeog(GIS), Head of Geospatial at National Highways discuss the importance of valuing and evaluating data when embarking upon digital transformations at #dataconnect24. Thank you to the Central Digital and Data Office, part of Cabinet Office for hosting a brilliant conference and to all the speakers and panellists for sharing their insights. #datavaluation #dataevaluation #government

Unlocking the Value of Data at JLR Data Fest - my Top Moments! I'm buzzing from an amazing two days at JLR data Fest, meeting a community of people passionate about unlocking the value of data. My Highlights: • Meeting the Champions of Data: Becoming ‘Data-Driven’ doesn’t happen overnight—it’s an ongoing journey 🛣️. JLR is making great strides by bringing together an incredible ecosystem of vendors, suppliers, and employees to drive this forward. • Sharing Data Valuation: Conversations with JLR employees about how putting a 💲 value on data helps better prioritise and target investment. We had some fantastic guesses in our `Guess the Value of Automotive Data` competition (winner to be announced soon!). For those curious, you can check out our on the value of data (see comments). • Making an Impact: Instead of giving away swag, we’re grateful to everyone who engaged with us and chose a charity for us to donate £5 to on their behalf. In total, we raised over £750 for Tusk, the British Heart Foundation, and the British Red Cross. 🎉 A big thanks to the organisers, Anna Tracy for patiently responding to my many queries, and Oliver Moffat for hosting a brilliant panel on Innovating with Data for Customer Love. Also, a huge thank you to Siobhan Ellis for your continued support. And of course, shoutout to my amazing colleagues who made the Anmut stand exceptional—Merve Simsek, Wilhelm Heyns, Shafeek Alibhai, Simon Ferriter, and Victoria Williams! Can’t wait for next year!

Organisations with a high level of data maturity 'shift left' to reduce their overall data costs, by avoiding scrap, re-work, corrections and quality improvements that could have been addressed earlier in the data lifecycle. 👇 See link in comments for more about the cost benefits of data maturity and shifting left. #shiftleft #datamaturity #datastrategy

Shift Left in Data Management – What is it, How Can it Help, and What Does it Miss? What is the ‘Shift Left’ Approach? The ‘Shift Left’ approach, originally from software development, involves moving key processes—like testing and quality assurance—earlier in the lifecycle to catch issues before they grow. As discussed in Andy Sawyer’s article (link in comments), this concept has been adapted for data management, where the focus is on addressing data quality, governance, and security from the very beginning of the data lifecycle. By shifting these practices left, companies can proactively prevent problems, reduce risks, improve data consistency, and save costs. My 2 Pence: ✅ The ‘Shift Left’ approach to data quality emphasises fixing problems at the source rather than after multiple transformations. It’s particularly effective for addressing objective data quality issues, like incomplete data or invalid formats—what most data profiling tools on the market focus on. ⚠️ However, it tends to overlook contextual data quality challenges—the business-specific requirements that may not be obvious to non-business stakeholders. For example, non-functional data requirements often go unnoticed when the broader business context isn’t fully considered. 🔄 While people often talk about shifting left for data quality, other areas—such as data governance—may need to be shifted right. This is about empowering data consumers to be more active participants. Rather than relying solely on data professionals, consumers should be able to look up the context of data for themselves and create business intelligence tools that meet their specific needs. Summary: The ‘Shift Left’ approach has clear benefits for improving data quality, but it’s important to remember that the most critical quality issues require business context. Your data doesn’t just have to be ‘fit’, but ‘fit for purpose’. This is why collaboration between data professionals and consumers is essential. #ShiftLeft #DataGovernance #DataQuality #DataManagement #BusinessIntelligence #DataStrategy

Making the final four in the Best New Consultancy category was a huge achievement. It’s testament to the hard work, collaboration and passion that goes into creating a positive impact for our clients. The work often happens behind the scenes, quietly, out of sight, without much fanfare. Last night was a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come and gives us further motivation to help more clients realise value from their data. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to the MCA event organisers for putting on a great evening. #mcaAwards #datavalue #teamanmut

🎙 Join us for an insightful LinkedIn Live event to uncover why the average tenure of a CDO is still circa 2 years, why only 1 in 3 data leaders feel “very confident” in their ability to communicate the business impact of investments in their function and why only 50% of data leaders are tracking the business value that data and analytics provide 🚀 🗣 Speakers: Simon Ferriter, CEO, Anmut Kinnari Ladha, Global Chief Data Officer, Merlin Entertainments Martin Houghton, Group Data Director, Kier Group 🎤 Expertly hosted by Kyle Winterbottom, CEO & Founder of Orbition Group, this dynamic panel will delve into this discussion and discover the ins and outs of this issue. 💡 By 2026, Gartner predicts that 75% of data leaders who fail to make organisation-wide influence will be assimilated into technology functions. To explore this further, Orbition Group is hosting a LinkedIn Live event in partnership with Anmut. Over the past 6 years, Anmut has collaborated closely with data leaders to help them make this leap, developing tools that enable data leaders to make an impact quickly, prioritise what’s most important and demonstrate value to the business.
