About us
We're a mental health charity and we’ve been supporting children and young people for over 70 years. We listen to and learn from their diverse voices, and integrate this with learnings from our science and practice to develop and deliver mental health care. This holistic approach has world-changing potential – our training, schools support, networks, partnerships and resources equip those who impact children and young people’s lives with the knowledge and skills to support their mental health. We believe mental wellbeing is the foundation from which children and young people achieve their potential. By continually expanding our understanding and translating it into practice – grounded in science and guided by children and young people – we can ensure they get the right support at the right time.

3.9 million children in the UK are living in poverty. We know children growing up in poverty can experience adversity later in life. Family hubs can help with this. Family hubs provide support to families from conception until age 19 (or 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities). They provide families with a single access point to integrated family support services for early help with social, emotional, physical and financial needs. Each family hub is bespoke to its local community while incorporating three key delivery principles: access, connection, relationships. The scale of the current mental health challenge cannot be met with 'more of the same' - not even more resources. We're not just here to deliver on what we already know. Our mission is to advance understanding and practice. At our annual National Centre for Family Hubs conference yesterday, we heard from a variety of local authorities who are working tirelessly across the country to transform lives. We outlined how much the government values the work of Family Hubs, formally recognising the huge benefits that integrated community services provide to families to not just survive but thrive. We talked about how we can build resilient family systems by applying what we know about trauma, and highlighted how relationships and connections are the secret to sustainable services. Thank you to all delegates and speakers for sharing their learning about the nationwide progress being made to ensure babies, children, young people and their families get the right support at the right time. Supportive relationships are crucial for maintaining good mental health at every stage of life. However, children who experience multiple events with interpersonal threats during childhood or adolescence are at a higher risk of developing mental health issues later on. To understand this connection, we need to explore how early abuse, and neglect can disrupt a child's ability to form healthy social bonds. Research shows that experiences such as neglect or maltreatment can shape how a child interacts with others and how others respond to them. Over time, this can create a more stressful social environment, fewer trusted relationships, and an increased vulnerability to mental health challenges. But these outcomes aren’t set in stone. By understanding how traumatic experiences shapes a child’s social world, we can develop more effective strategies to help them build and maintain positive, supportive relationships – ultimately reducing the risk of mental health difficulties. Join us for a powerful webinar, chaired by David Trickey, featuring expert insights from Brenda McHugh MBE, Consultant Systemic Psychotherapist and Co-Founder of the Pears Family School, and Dr Ron Dodzro, Clinical Psychologist and author of The Life of a Top Boy: A qualitative exploration of young Black men and their stories of experiencing violent activity in the context of gang affiliation and trauma. Together, they will explore the interaction between trauma and the social world, sharing approaches to create environments for recovery. Book your space now: https://lnkd.in/gQHv_nW2. Please note, the live webinar will be recorded and shared with registered delegates to watch for up to 30 days.
