Inspiring a Better Britain.

About us

Anthropy®™ is a major three day gathering for leaders. It grew out of the fusion of ideas for a UK ‘Davos’, a ‘Glastonbury of Good’ and a national ‘Ted talk’. It is in fact none of these but will combine the best aspects of thought leadership, creativity and inspiration together, in order for senior leaders and influencers from across the country to share and be encouraged to play their part in shaping our national narrative. The Covid period and how we move forward, offers a unique opportunity and moment in time to think differently and create the means to inspire change. It affords a chance to re-assess as a nation what we value and what values we will embrace to create new thinking to tackle long standing challenges. We seek to put aside what divides us as we all go about our good works to build a better, more harmonious and human centric future. Our Approach We are asking four questions about the qualities which we wish to see influencing our futures and the qualities we then contribute to the world. These are our four ‘pillars’ of interest 👩🏻🤝👨🏾People👉🏻What quality of life do we wish to see over the next 30 years? 🏡 Place👉🏻 What qualities of place are required for this quality of life? 💷 Prosperity👉🏻 What are the qualities of a ‘good economy’ to support our aspirations? 🌍 Global Perspective👉🏻 What qualities do we represent to the world to help solve shared issues?

We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Sir David Varney, a visionary leader in business and personally known to Anthropy Founder, John O’Brien MBE, who remembers his legacy in the post below.

I may be a week late on this but am very sorry to hear of the death of Sir David Varney, who has passed at age 78. I last had the pleasure of an ad-hoc meeting with him a few years ago and he was as ever enthusiastic about the good of business. So many will remember his visionary leadership across both business and public sectors. As Chairman of The King's responsible business network, Business in The Community from 2001 to 2004, he championed responsible corporate practices, inspiring a generation of business leaders. His influence extended far beyond business and went into government to help he modernise public service delivery, advising Gordon Brown on transforming the efficiency of HM Revenue & Customs and Whitehall services. David's private-sector journey included pivotal roles at Shell, British Gas, and O2. At Shell, he led European operations and managed their Formula 1 sponsorship with McLaren. He later transformed British Gas’s oil and gas division and, at BT, he launched Cellnet as O2, making it a household name in mobile services. I recall a wonderful breakfast he arranged with Sir Clive Woodward, celebrating England's Rugby world cup win and O2's sponsorship. David’s legacy is an inspiring blueprint for thoughtful, cross-sector leadership aimed at meaningful societal impact. Exactly what we strive for at #Anthropy. In a world that often values results over relationships, leading with empathy is more crucial than ever. What does it mean to be a thoughtful leader, and what legacy do you want your leadership to leave behind? Read more on this topic in Anthropy Founder John O’Brien MBE's recent article: https://lnkd.in/dDF84NFs #Anthropy #RebootBritain #leadership #empathy #relationships

Actions this week have had cause to make me pause and I hope this is helpful. In today’s world, "thought leadership" often takes centre stage, spotlighting rapid insights, bold opinions, and data-driven authority. In my latest Substack I share something more profound: thoughtful leadership, but also a confession on a recent failure. In short: 🤔 Where thought leadership seeks swift impact, thoughtful leadership takes a more deliberate path. It’s about listening deeply, weighing decisions with care. It’s not about being the loudest voice but the most present one, making room for reflection and true understanding. 👽 In a fast-paced, AI-driven world, the value of thoughtful leadership might seem out of step. But I believe this approach serves not only our personal and professional circles but also society at large. 👉 Choosing thoughtfulness is about nurturing relationships, not just adding connections, making decisions that consider both the present and future, and slowing down to act with intention. 📣 Shameful confession – just recently, frustration led me to use social media as a "megaphone" to get someone’s attention, only to lose the chance at a meaningful relationship. This has reminded me that thoughtful leadership requires more than just words; it’s a commitment to consistent integrity. If there's a path worth taking, it’s this one. Much of Anthropy's unique magic is owed to its contradictions. Listen to Anthropy Founder John O’Brien MBE as he explains how and why these arose. Which one do you think is the most impactful? #Anthropy #contradiction #impact

Anthropy Chairman: The UK's largest leadership gathering: Past EMEA Managing Partner of Omnicom's 100 Agency Group: Serial Philanthropist: See: www's .Anthropy.uk & .johnobrien.world

In this short film on my daily walk, I wanted to focus about the apparent contradictions which sets Anthropy apart - unlike any other leadership event in the UK. I believe those contradictions are exactly what make it so powerful. Contradiction One: We started a national conversation, not via government and a top down approach, but by percolating up the ideas and energy from across our communities, businesses, public, academic and charity organisations. Contradiction Two: Anthropy didn’t emerge from London, our national capital, it arose from Shropshire, yet spread nationally, because leaders all over, want a different forum, with different conversations, with different people. Contradiction Three: We hold it in the most inconvenient place, not in London or another city, but in Cornwall at the Eden Project, not because its convenient, but because it’s a place of consequence. Contradiction Four: We put business leaders next to artists, academics, the media, public and societal leaders. We mix leaders up from different sectors because no single sector has all the answers. Contradiction Four: Instead of a single theme, making ANthropy simpler to categorise, we have the biggest, all embracing theme of all - our country. Contradiction Four: We don’t target one sector's agenda, we target them all, in order to break down silos, not reinforce them. Contradiction Five: We don’t just have a few big names as speakers, we have masses of big names in the audience. Contradiction Six: We don’t in this hybrid age, ‘Zoom’ speakers in or content out. You are either at Anthropy or you aren’t – in the zone or nowhere near it. For enlightened leaders, going to something which contradicts the normal type of event or conference, should be thrilling, but it might also just be the way we contradict the negativity and issues we are facing together. I am calling on all contrarians, join us at Anthropy in March next year and prove yet again that going against the flow, is where you create a flow of ones own. When both the speakers and the audience of any given session are made up of highly influential individuals, the result is this: ⇨ an unparalleled environment for strategic collaboration and impactful conversation.
