Today’s budget isn’t just another line item in government policy – it’s a turning point for the UK’s entrepreneurial future. The British startup ecosystem relies on incentives that fuel innovation, encourage risk-taking, and allow founders to grow their businesses. But with proposed changes to Business Asset Disposal Relief (formerly Entrepreneurs’ Relief), the incentives that make the UK an attractive place for startups are now under threat. Entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and organisations like the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) are calling on Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves to reconsider these proposed changes. The FSB’s Tina McKenzie MBE highlights a key concern: increasing taxes on business sales could deter individuals from launching new ventures, impacting both economic growth and job creation. This relief currently allows entrepreneurs to pay a reduced tax rate of 10% on qualifying gains up to £1 million – a safety net that rewards innovation and the risks they take. Scaling back or removing this relief could signal to the world that the UK is shifting away from supporting its entrepreneurs and innovators – those who drive economic growth and create jobs. Now, more than ever, it’s essential to protect the incentives that drive the UK’s entrepreneurial spirit. Last week, at our Blue Earth Film Festival, powered by Adventure Uncovered, we unveiled a teaser trailer for the upcoming feature documentary, Jo in the Water. The film sheds light on the alarming issue of sewage and pollution in our rivers and seas. It’s a deeply personal story about an ordinary individual who discovers a passion for wild sea swimming and, moved by the environmental damage, feels driven to take action. Now, we invite you to be a part of making this important project a reality by supporting the crowdfunding campaign and sharing far and wide: https://lnkd.in/e8rT3bYD “Our water system is broken. We are all suffering the effects of sewage being dumped on our beaches and in our rivers. And we are sick of this shit. Surfers Against Sewage campaigns to end this sewage crisis and is supporting Jo in her brave stand against powerful polluting water companies. Jo’s story is inspiring and will galvanise public anger at the injustice of this situation. It is our right to swim in the sea. This film will help us all reclaim our waters from the polluters!” Giles Bristow, CEO Surfers Against Sewage The film is being made by a team of award-winning filmmakers supported by Surfers Against Sewage and River Action UK and will go into UK cinemas summer 2025. #AdventureUncovered #RiverAction #SurfersAgainstSewage

We caught up with Beccy Speight, Chief Executive of the RSPB at Blue Earth Summit, who shared her thoughts on why now is the critical time for action on biodiversity. Beccy highlighted the alarming findings from the WWF’s Living Planet Report, launched on the 9th of October, pointing out that we’ve lost almost three-quarters of nature globally in just the last 50 years. This loss underscores the urgent need for collective efforts to reverse the damage and protect the natural world for future generations. The WWF Living Planet Report 2024 highlights a dramatic 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations between 1970 and 2020, underscoring the severe impact of human activity on global biodiversity. The report, which tracks nearly 35,000 vertebrate populations from 5,495 species, reveals the most significant decline in freshwater species (85%), followed by terrestrial (69%) and marine (56%) populations. This decline is largely driven by habitat loss, degradation, and overharvesting, with the global food system being a major culprit, followed by climate change, invasive species, and disease. The report warns that the combination of nature loss and climate change is pushing the planet toward dangerous tipping points, which could lead to irreversible environmental damage and severe consequences for human livelihoods, food security, and economies. The report also shares positive solutions from conservation efforts, such as the growth in mountain gorilla populations and the resurgence of bison in central Europe. However, the report stresses that global action remains insufficient to meet agreed-upon goals like the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Paris Agreement. WWF calls for urgent action from governments and businesses to realign policies, scale up investments, and reduce overconsumption to mitigate further damage to biodiversity and the climate.
