This week, Jason & Carlos dust off the history books to discover mega projects around the world that suffered unfortunate circumstances during delivery. The duo talk through unique situations ranging from a project that's 100+ years old and still going to one whose faults were hidden from the public, as well as what learnings can be drawn from these 'unlucky' projects.

How can construction projects make better use of mapping data from their GIS? This was the problem facing the Eastern Busway Alliance before they started using Aphex. The potential was enormous. Their GIS team had excellent map data about the project, including critical imagery and vector layers. But the tools used by engineers on the ground (such as spreadsheets) don’t usually have access to this data. In fact, the maps used on construction projects are often created in (cover your eyes, GIS team) powerpoint. The Eastern Busway Alliance found a better way. Here’s what they did: 1/ Pulled GIS data into Aphex This allows engineers to have the latest map data—including the latest imagery— available for every task in Aphex. 2/ Used Aphex’s map view to track and manage overlapping work areas ahead of time. As ACCIONA AU & NZ GIS Specialist Amit Kokje, PhD. says, “Aphex is proving immensely helpful because it enables everyone to visualise the overlapping work areas during the briefing." 3/ Used the Aphex API to pull data from Aphex back into their GIS. This allowed the GIS team to get work areas marked up in Aphex back into their GIS, ensuring the central GIS team had a real-time view of the project. 4/ Used the map view to run better meetings Projecting the live map view from Aphex during meetings ensures that everyone has a clear view of the project going forward, helping to highlight any potential conflicts. As ACCIONA Project Engineer Jeniffer Lourdsamy PMP® says, “Using Aphex, we've cut down on the administrative burden of our meetings and streamlined communication, so we can focus more on getting the job done.” With construction continuing into 2027, we look forward to working with the EBA team on this transformative project for Auckland.

See how Kier Group ensures clear visibility of all work occurring on site and that operational teams really own the programme. "In a project that’s ever evolving and operating in and around a busy live city-centre environment, it’s important that the team stay abreast of all the updates and changes that inevitably do occur. Aphex allows us to not only track performance, but ensure better visibility of all work occurring on site." - Dan Hutchings, Project Director
