Scientists in the US and Germany have discovered two highly unusual bacterial species in the tissue of deep-sea corals from the Gulf of Mexico. The previously unknown coral symbionts have an extremely reduced genome and lack the ability to obtain energy from carbohydrates. https://lnkd.in/eAVz_bj4 Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg Lehigh University Penn State University Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology Kiel University of Applied Sciences

AMI was proud to support the AAAS Caribbean Division event on October 26, celebrating Caribbean women who move science 🌎🔬 Hosted by AAAS and AMI's Global Ambassador for Puerto Rico, Filipa Godoy-Vitorino, we sponsored two awards for best student presentations in microbiology. Congratulations to the awardees, Zinned Medina and Juliana Serrano-Rodríguez, who each received AMI Associate memberships. Both students expressed their excitement about joining the AMI community and discovering the many benefits of membership!
Amazing weekend for science in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Oct 26 2024 marks the first official event in the Caribbean with the participation of Applied Microbiology International, one of the oldest microbiology societies in the world - formerly Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM), founded in 1931, resulting from advances in dairy microbiology in the late 1920s, and now as a global community of microbiologists who have come together to advance scientific impact. AMI publishes six internationally acclaimed journals in partnership with Wiley and Oxford University Press and publish an industry-leading magazine, The Microbiologist. AMI offered two associate memberships to outstanding graduate student presentations in Microbiology at the 39th annual meeting of the #AAASCARIBBEANDIVISION, one in environmental microbiology from the lab of Natasha DeLeon-Rodriguez by Zinned Medina and another in human microbiome from the lab of Josué Pérez-Santiago by Juliana Serrano. This weekend celebrated women in science (#AAAS) and emerging infectious diseases (Sociedad de Microbiólogos de Puerto Rico 🦠) with significant student participation of hundreds of good quality scientific posters. Congrats to the leadership of both groups and the amazing mentoring and support given to basic science in the region. I look forward to more collaborations between societies, which is, in the end, what will move science forward.
