For two thirds of the Earth's history, microorganisms were the rulers of our planet. They developed an impressive diversity of species and metabolic pathways. Even today, microorganisms play a key role in shaping the Earth and its climate. At the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPIMM), we study microorganisms in the sea and other bodies of water. What role do they play, what are their properties and how great is their biodiversity? What contribution do microorganisms make to the global element cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and iron? What does this mean for our environment and our climate? Researchers from all over the world, engineers, technicians and many others want to answer these and many other questions at the MPIMM. Their areas of expertise range from microbiology to microsensor technology, geochemistry to genome analysis and molecular ecology to modeling. The MPIMM was founded in 1992 and is part of the Max Planck Society (MPG). Since 2002, the MPIMM has been running the International Max Planck Research School of Marine Microbiology (MarMic), a program for highly qualified master's and doctoral students.

Resilient algae may speed up Greenland ice melt The tiny ice inhabitants darken the glacier surface and can thus accelerate its melting. Tiny algae darken the surface of glaciers and thus accelerate their melting. This is the case, for example, on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which plays an important role in our climate and is already melting increasingly fast due to global warming. A study by the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany, and the Aarhus University, Denmark, now shows that the ice algae grow extremely efficiently, despite the fact that there are hardly any nutrients available to them on the ice. "I wanted to understand how such algal blooms can develop in Greenland,” explains lead author Laura Halbach from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. Using new methods, Halbach was the first researcher ever to measure how the algae absorb and store nutrients. "The algae can grow and colonize the ice despite the scarcity of nutrients. In view of the fact that the climate is getting warmer and ever more snow-free areas and thus more potential habitat for the algae appears on the Greenland Ice Sheet, the algae’s ability to efficiently absorb and store nutrients is particularly significant.” Learn more about this research on our website! #icealgae #climatechange #greenland #marinescience #WomeninSTEM #microbiology #science

👉 #JobAlert #PhD 🧑🎓 In our HGF-MPG Joint Research Group for Deep-Sea Ecology and Technology we are searching for a #PhD #Student on the project "Functional diversity and connectivity of microbiomes in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans over space and time" The project addresses the diversity, function and activity of microbial communities in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans across seasonal and environmental gradients. Key points are the ecological and biogeochemical roles of microbes for the biological carbon pump across sea-ice, oceanographic, and primary productivity regimes. To achieve these objectives, the candidate will analyze metabarcoding and meta’omic datasets, as well as study bacterial model isolates. The work includes bioinformatic analyses of sequence data in the environmental context, bacterial cultivation, and ecological statistics. Within an interdisciplinary framework, the project will determine key microbial populations and functions in the seasonal biological carbon pump, from both sea-ice and pelagic realms. If you are interested, learm more about the position and find the application link on our website. Apply by March 16, 2025
