Thank you to our CEO Hugh Sturgess for sharing his insights and advice on career development and building leadership skills in the latest "Coffee with the CEO" session for iCAN: The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network. ☕ It was a really engaging morning and it was our pleasure to host the event!
🍎 An inspiring session with Hugh Sturgess from Arch Insurance International! We recently hosted a brilliant "Coffee with the CEO" session featuring Hugh Sturgess, CEO of Arch Insurance International. Hugh shared invaluable insights on the importance of listening, humility, and taking bold steps in your career, leaving our iCAN members with plenty of actionable advice to apply in their own journeys. ☕ What is “Coffee with the CEO”? ☕ Our "Coffee with the CEO" series offers iCAN members direct access to senior leaders across the insurance industry. These sessions, held in collaboration with our sponsors, cover career advice, personal stories, industry trends, and more, helping attendees accelerate their professional growth with practical insights. During Hugh’s session, key takeaways included: 🔑 The importance of listening Hugh emphasised that effective listening is crucial to problem-solving and career growth. "Many senior roles can fail because people don’t listen enough," he said. Listening helps to understand problems more deeply and ask the right follow-up questions to move forward. It's a skill needed in every role, at every level. 🔑 Humility in leadership Hugh highlighted the value of humility, especially when dealing with imposter syndrome. He encouraged attendees to be open to learning from others, saying, "Don’t take criticism from people you wouldn’t take advice from." A good mentor helps challenge your thinking and guide your career path, but it’s essential to separate the roles of a manager and a mentor. 🔑 Be bold and test your limits Pushing beyond comfort zones is key to personal and professional growth. Hugh shared his own experiences of moving between sectors and how stepping into unfamiliar roles can lead to incredible opportunities. "You will get promoted when you’re ready, so act like you’re in the role for a few months before it happens." Hugh also highlights a worthwhile read from Harvard Business Review 2023 on the topic of imposter syndrome, which you can read more here: https://lnkd.in/grJDu-hg A huge thank you to Hugh and our sponsor Arch Insurance International for an inspiring and insightful session! 🔔 Follow iCAN: The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network for more updates and upcoming events. 📌 Sign up to become an iCAN member here: https://bit.ly/3XVjJEd Rachel B. / Neetal Chotai Assoc CIPD / Buffy Morris / Christy Caragol / Evelyn Calloway / Gaia Corbetta / Marcella McLean #DEI #icaninspire #careerdevelopment #coffeewiththeCEO
