Badger (Birmingham and District General Practitioner Emergency Room) also known as Badger Health Group and Badger Group is a not for profit social enterprise healthcare co-operative. It was established in 1996 by local doctors who joined together to initially provide an improved out-of-hours service for their patients. Today Badger has over 230 opted-in GP members in 60+ practices and provides 24/7 message handling, urgent primary care and GP out of hours for their patients. It also holds contracts for out of hours, acute visiting and urgent care with CCGs in the West Midlands. It covers 1.6 million patients. It has received 'Good' rating by the Care Quality Commission inspection in all five areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
Badger was launched in 1996 by local GPs under the leadership of Dr Liz Nyholm and Dr Fay Wilson. Dr Wilson continues to be a Board Director and also chairs the Birmingham Division of the British Medical Association. Over the years Badger added Sett Support Partnership plc, Badger Medical ltd and Badger Healthcare ltd in its not for profit group. Today Badger owns its headquarters premises, with call centre, treatment, training and office facilities and has a strong culture of learning, education and development as an employer of local people. Badger works in partnership with other organisations, including the NHS, commercial and voluntary sectors.
