The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) is the professional association and registered trade union established to represent the interests of all UK pilots. We represent over 10,000 pilots and are recognised in 23 different companies; that’s over 85% of all commercial pilots flying in the UK. The association holds the largest collective resource of commercial pilot qualification and experience in the UK.

Following Heathrow's announcement of 'record' Q3 results, and an amended 2024 passenger forecast to reach 83 million passengers, BALPA General Secretary Amy Leversidge said: “Today’s announcement that Heathrow is set to reach record numbers this year is exciting news and demonstrates the strength and resilience of the UK aviation industry. The aviation industry contributes £24 billion to the UK economy and supports just over one million jobs, aviation is vital to the UK economy. Today BALPA’s leadership and experts met with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom to discuss flight safety and skills in the aviation industry. BALPA’s General Secretary Amy Leversidge, Executive President, Paul Copland, Head of Flight Safety, Joji Waites and Head of Membership and Careers, Wendy Pursey briefed attendees on issues that matter to UK pilots and discussed how to ensure safety remains at the heart of aviation. As trusted experts, we are committed to influencing decision makers and ensuring the voice of pilots is heard by those with power to make real changes. We take great pride in being the only UK pilot union with such reach and influence. Following the release of the CAA’s CAP 3019 – ‘AI in Aviation: A Technology Outlook’, BALPA is renewing our message that safety should be at the heart of aviation development. 👨✈️💡 🤖 Artificial systems technology is rapidly evolving, so it is timely for an overarching strategy to help ensure that such innovation is responsibly focussed in areas of need. It is BALPA’s contention that a prerequisite of the implementation of any new technology should be that it helps to make things safer (just maintaining the status quo is not sufficient). For example, automation that works in harmony with the user to improve human performance whilst reducing workload is to be welcomed. Having capable technology in the cockpit isn’t enough. BALPA urges regulators, aircraft manufacturers and system developers to ensure that technological advances are developed on the essential foundation of two qualified, highly skilled and well-rested pilots in the cockpit at all times.
