Following the release of the CAA’s CAP 3019 – ‘AI in Aviation: A Technology Outlook’, BALPA is renewing our message that safety should be at the heart of aviation development. 👨✈️💡
🤖 Artificial systems technology is rapidly evolving, so it is timely for an overarching strategy to help ensure that such innovation is responsibly focussed in areas of need.
It is BALPA’s contention that a prerequisite of the implementation of any new technology should be that it helps to make things safer (just maintaining the status quo is not sufficient). For example, automation that works in harmony with the user to improve human performance whilst reducing workload is to be welcomed.
Having capable technology in the cockpit isn’t enough. BALPA urges regulators, aircraft manufacturers and system developers to ensure that technological advances are developed on the essential foundation of two qualified, highly skilled and well-rested pilots in the cockpit at all times.
