  • Maintaining production efficiency and preventing costly downtime with linear heat detection! The LaFargeHolcim cement plant was facing a difficult situation; their fire protection was lacking, resulting in losses and downtime from temperature-related incidents. They needed a new solution that delivers in terms of response time, reliability, and cost, while fitting seamlessly into the site's overall emergency response system. Our FireLaser technology was the perfect fit, using a sensing cable to measure temperature across thousands of points along the length of the cable to provide vital conveyor belt fire protection. The temperature data and alarm events are fed back to the cement plants SCADA system providing automatic fire detection for each conveyer. To keep costs down and reduce maintenance, the sensing cable woks as a zero maintenance passive sensor that continously monitors the belts without needing frequent repairs or upkeep. • Reimagine perimeter security with fiber optics! Fiber optic sensing technology is most commonly used for perimeter security in 4 key sectors: power and utilities, renewable energy, telecoms, and oil and gas. But why should we limit this incredibly powerful, beneficial technology to just these sectors? For an organisation to be a suitable candidate for fiber optic intrusion detection, it needs one key thing: a perimeter. Across the globe, from the military to education, just imagine the impact fiber optic technology could have when used in applications such as: 📚 Education establishments to safeguard pupils from intrusions. 🛎️ Hotels and leisure facilities such as golf courses to prevent unauthorised access and malicious activity. 🐾 Zoos, wildlife centres, and farms to keep animals safe and limit poaching or vandalism. 🚆 Railroads to curb trespassing and fatalities. 🏰 Historic landmarks and gardens to protect fragile infrastructure and ecosystems. The possibilities are endless with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). With a range of solutions, organisations don't even need a physical perimeter such as a fence, DualSentry sensing cables can be discreetly buried underground without disturbing the surrounding environment. Change the way you think about fiber optic sensing, let's work together to create safer environments and stronger security for all! #PerimeterSecurity #IntrusionDetection #FiberOpticSensing

  • How can we work to prevent devastating wildfires? 🔥 Worryingly, we have seen some colossal, widespread wildfires across the globe recently, from LA to Wales, raising concerns over the health of future ecosystems. Something needs to be done; there is a growing urgency to find a solution to these fires, yet many experts are still asking the question: how can we prevent these fires? We believe the solution lies in fiber optic sensing. Whilst Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) may not be able to prevent the source of a wildfire, its rapid detection capabilities can alert organisations quickly to allow swift responses that halt the fire before it has a chance to spread. This reduces the damage caused by wildfires to the local ecosystem, surrounding infrastructure, and human life. Fiber optic sensing cables can cover miles and miles of wildlife areas, even the most remote, with the same level of reliability and performance as applications within a small, highly controlled environment. We discussed this topic further in a previous blog, along with a range of sensing technology innovations, which you can find here: https://bit.ly/3A31Yeb #DistributedTemperatureSensing #Wildfire #FireDetection

  • How does Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) work? At Bandweaver, we talk a lot about the power of our distributed temperature sensing solutions and their incredible fire detection abilities but, you may be wondering how they work. DTS systems monitor very small changes in temperature and their precise location along the fiber, this cable can extend up to 40km with a sensor placed every meter. When detecting a temperature change, pulses are sent along the fiber to the signal processor which analyses the back-scattered light. If a fire occurs, this causes an increase in temperature which causes a peak in the temperature trace. Alternatively, ice causes a dip in the temperature trace. As a standard, single ended sensing cables are used, but we can monitor in a loop configuration where needed so fiber optics can continue to detect threats even if the cable is cut. Fiber Optic DTS is an ideal solution for harsh environments and doesn't require electronics to be placed in the field, making it an incredibly versatile solution. DTS is the future of fire detection, explore our industry-leading solutions here: https://bit.ly/40MvDCM #FireDetection #DTS #FiberOpticTechnology

  • Safeguarding overhead power lines from intrusions and disruption with DAS Horizon! The cost of tampering and theft of materials on electrical distribution and transmission lines can stack up to over $96 billion a year. This results in higher prices and costly subsidies, highlighting the importance of solving this problem. That solution is fiber optic sensing, as we demonstrated in the Dominican Republic. Our application of DAS technology on an overhead power line in the Dominican Republic shows how our powerful solutions can precisely identify when and where an incursion took place, alerting the organisation. The Horizon DAS system provides a cost-effective solution to the problem of power theft and tampering with electricity lines, cutting costs and increasing system availability by alerting users sooner to potential threats. This means action can be taken before significant damage is done. Discover just how powerful this solution was in preventing power line theft; read the full case study here: https://bit.ly/3WwYet8 #CaseStudy #DAS #Power

  • Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems: fence installation or buried underground sensors? When it comes to implementing fiber optic PIDS, there are two main installation methods available: fence mounting or burying underground. Fence mounting attaches the sensors directly to the perimeter fence to detect activities such as leaning, climbing, tapping, or cutting. This application's advantages include immediate detection of intrusions at the fence line to enable prompt response, visual deterrence through the visible presence of sensors, and cost-effective installation by making use of existing fence structures. Fence installation is ideal for industrial facilities where physical barriers are the first line of defence, or warehouses or storage yards to prevent unauthorised access to valuable inventory. Burying sensors below the ground can detect disturbances from digging, walking, or vehicle movement above. This is advantageous for covert monitoring, where intruders are unable to detect or tamper with the system; this installation is also less susceptible to environmental factors that might affect fence-mounted systems. Buried sensing cables are ideal for open fields or borders where no physical fence exists or for high-security areas such as military bases or critical infrastructure requiring discreet surveillance. The choice between these installations should consider factors such as the site's physical characteristics, security requirements, environmental conditions, and budget constraints. By selecting the PIDS type for the specific security scenario, organisations can enhance their site security effectively. • What sets our technology apart from traditional monitoring solutions? Our industry-leading fiber optic monitoring solutions stand out for a number of reasons. Scalable, low maintenance, and perfectly positioned for AI enhancement, fiber optic sensing systems provide accurate, real-time data to alert organisations to threats and fires at the earliest possible point, minimising damage to the business, its assets, and the surrounding environment. With finely tuned sensors, fiber optic technology is able to reduce the number of nuisance alarms whilst still maintaining a high level of threat detection. This stands out significantly from traditional monitoring systems, which often require threats to increase to a critical level before they can be detected; this in particular applies to fire detection solutions that identify a fire once it has already had a chance to destroy infrastructure. Traditional sensing solutions for intrusion detection are more vulnerable as they can suffer from blind spots or common faults that can be exploited by intruders. False alarms are also a common occurrence with traditional solutions, wasting vital time and potentially expending finite resources unnecessarily. At Bandweaver we trust completely in the capability and strength of our fiber optic detecting sensing solutions, which is why we have supplied them to protect critical infrastructure across the globe.
