🗞️ The autumn budget was announced yesterday and it’s brought mixed reactions. The most significant change for private companies is the increase in employers' National Insurance, which will raise tax bills and impact hiring and investment. Capital gains tax saw moderate increases. Previously set at 10% and 20%, the rates are now 18% and 24%. For Business Asset Disposal Relief, the rate will increase to 14% in April 2025 and to 18% in April 2026, giving founders a few months to benefit from the 10% rate on the first £1m of realised value. Notably, CGT hikes were less severe than anticipated. The government expressed commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, likely influenced (in our humble opinion) by input from entrepreneurs and groups like Startup Coalition. Carried interest will face a significant change, being treated as income from April 2026, with an interim CGT increase to 32% in April 2025. This shift could reduce the UK's appeal for private equity funds. Here at Beauhurst, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on what happens next for private companies across the UK and the knock-on effect it will have. #AutumnBudget2024

In case you missed it earlier this week, The Times covered our latest findings as part of the UK ScaleUp Investment Mission, in collaboration with Beauhurst, highlighting the alarming decline in Series A funding for UK startups. Key insights include: → Series A funding down 44% YoY, with Q3 seeing a 57% drop from Q2 → 9 out of 10 seed-funded startups can't secure Series A funding → Only 32 UK companies reached Series A in Q3 - a six-year low This decline threatens the UK's hard-won progress in tech innovation and scaleup support. The UK ScaleUp Investment Mission is here to bridge this gap, supporting high-potential UK scaleups by working with the wider ecosystem, including Government, to reverse this trend. For further information on the UK ScaleUp Investment Mission, see Ian Merricks, FBCS FRSA Merricks’ original post linked in the comments.

What’s the deal with ESG? We crunched the numbers to find out. In the fourth quarter of 2023, investment in ESG companies hit a record high, with £2.66b poured into these firms in just three months. In contrast, a decade earlier in 2014, the total annual investment in ESG companies was only £773m. And now, we can reveal that there’s already been £4.86b invested into companies so far this year that hit one of our ESG signals. With Q2 2024 bringing in a huge £2.14b. Beauhurst gives you the tools to easily search for companies committed to ESG values, using our signals feature. Want to know more? Click here: https://lnkd.in/eTnq6exy Or send us a message 💬

Last week, we asked you what your concerns are for the upcoming Autumn Budget 🍂 The votes are in. Over half of people said their biggest concern regarding Rachel Reeves’ budget was higher capital gains tax — we know this is a major worry for UK businesses. But what will next week bring? We’ll be watching next Wednesday. #AutumnBudget2024
