The official launch of our Non Executive Director Disruption series! Here we give you our Managing Director Kanika S.’s journey into NED roles. The highlights….. 🕔 Its now been a 5 year journey of NED-ing 😳 When she started she had no idea what the role was 🧭 It wasn’t a career step that aligned with a master plan 👯♀️ Often the NED world is something you know about, if someone you know does them 👩🏼🎤 The routes into applying can be exclusive and there are a few good brokers & organisations who see the transferability of skills 👩🏻 Mentors made a big difference in ensuring that she didn’t de-value her skills #nonexecdirector #directordisruption #positivedisruption #disrupters #ned #nedwork #femaleleaders #boardmembers #livedexperience

Finding your tribe through external conferences…. Often people talk about how conference talks are good for profile. In reality conference talking can be time consuming, is rarely well paid and takes a lot of administrative coordination. 🛫 To ensure that people get the best out of being part of a conference, we have offered you our Beetroot Consulting Ltd top tips! 👏🏽 1️⃣ Speak at conferences that have a clear purpose that aligns with your own (Whilst invitations to talk may be plenty, the investment personally is also sizeable. Dont be afraid to be picky and invest in the conferences that have a purpose) 2️⃣ Take the time to get to know the conference curators and structure (Watching Vanessa coordinate the timing, structure and purpose of her HDN Panel was a beautiful sight to see and engaging to help shape the talk added much more value to those who ended up engaging on the day) 3️⃣ Prepare, but don’t prepare too much (Doing prep calls for a conference with other talkers and panelists can help you to get a sense of who the others are and what they will say. But if you over-prep you end up having the discussion before you get on the stage. Discussion becomes very formulaic and dull… leave space for it to flow) 4️⃣ Take the opportunity to get to know the people you meet through conferences (A lot of people who are talking at conferences have their own purpose or mission. Conferences can bring you together with people outside of your organisation, sector and specialisms but find a tribe of people who have aligned purpose) 5️⃣ Wear something you feel comfortable in (Many people say that you should wear something formal to conferences. Often this means that you are fitting into an outfit you don’t often wear and doesn’t feel very YOU. But the point of going outside is often to be memorable and connect with people. Wear something you feel good in and don’t worry about the rest) #womenwholead #femalefounders #conference #speakers #panelspeakers #toptips #conferencetoptips #selfemployed Kanika S.

😳 So it’s time to be honest.😳 The real truth of the story is, if you invite me out for a cuppa, breakfast, dinner, lunch…. I’m asking myself if this work, this meet up, this chat is more fun than staying home with my dog? 🏡🐕 #dogowners #dogsoflinkedin #macduff #femaleleaders #selfemployed #homeworking #homebody #facetoface #meetups Kanika S.

Try saying no in polite British society, simply because you don’t want to do something… no excuse, no finesse. Do it because you know that this thing you are considering doing isn’t good for you. 🇬🇧💂🏽♀️ 👩🏼🎤It’s become more and more real to me that ‘self-care’ is actually a radical act. 👩🏼🎤 Now when I say this, I don’t mean selfishness, I don’t mean the occasional trip to a yoga retreat… I mean actual self care.👏🏽 👎🏽The idea of saying no to things you cannot or do not want to do… ✌🏾The idea of leaving organisations that don’t appreciate you… 👯♀️The idea of being intentional about the people you want to have in your life… ⏱️The idea that you protect the time you spend on yourself… It’s often the self care stuff that people actually expect you to drop, to ensure consistency of income, social cohesion and other peoples comfort. Self care is radical because the act of putting in boundaries is often met with surprise. 🚫FYI…. I don’t dismiss that some of us got to pay bills and there is a connection between saying no and having privilege/agency. But the point still stands. 🚫 #selfcare #makingchoices #chooseyou #femaleleaders #blackleaders #diverseteams #womenintech #womeninchange #selfemployed Kanika S.

Now Data Discussions delves into the big topics, we are walking on the wild side here…. why are the processes so slow?😳 It’s a common theme in H.E. that there is often a process issue thats backed by a whole bunch of people trying to do the right thing. 💪🏽 It means that organisations can be reactive rather than proactive.☄️ Some of our theories of why…. in an attempt to get things exactly right, show fairness, consult with the parties, get assurance through a million approvals… we create processes that are trying to eradicate risk.🤔 In reality, that level of perfection results in creating new risks, that are often ignored.🏚️ Ian C. #Datadiscussions #HigherEducation #Processes #Risk

Fabulous to see the write up from The Housing Diversity Network Autumn Conference. With our MD Kanika S. quoted continuing the campaign around changing NED Boards for the better. “Diversity of the boardroom is very much a reflection of the practices of boards. So, let’s ask ourselves a question: can we really hold the housing board to account if fundamentally, the board, in and of itself, is very unlikely to have diverse and inclusive practices?’ Important topics at the Birmingham conference, beautifully curated by Dewbien Plummer! #housingdiversitynetwork #femaleleaders #womenwholead #hdnconference #nedboards #nonexecdirectors #diversity

Disruption on Board!👏🏽 Managing expectations as a new Non Executive Director can be a challenge and is often a place where new board members stumble. @Kanika Selvan was given some good advice in the early days… You won’t be useful for about 6 months. Taking into account the board positions are part time and individuals are often juggling other work commitments, our personal expectations often need to be adapted. Being a new board member requires you to understand: 🕋The organisation (what’s its purpose, how does it function, what does it deliver and who delivers it) 🌴The social context (The politics, the social issues and challenges that surround the organisation) 🤯Your Board member responsibilities (What are you strategically and legally accountable for when you join) 🔨The governance and external regulatory context (The role you play as any type of provider of services or products) 🎙️The Language nuances of the board (The way that the board works and interacts culturally and operationally) #NED #Boards #Non-Executive
