If you have been told it’s not possible to have a home birth, or you can only have a home birth at certain times or on certain days, or if you have experienced any suspensions of or restrictions to home birth services at all, we want to hear from you! Please get in touch with us via our short survey form at: bit.ly/home_BR. 📈In September 2024, the largest proportion of enquiries we received through Birthrights' advice & information service were related to home birth service suspensions. We are deeply concerned at the increasing number of reports of restrictions to and suspensions of homebirth services across the UK. 📨Last week we sent a freedom of information request to every NHS Trust in the United Kingdom to establish the extent of home birth restrictions and suspensions. ❗Now 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 to campaign for a maternity system that respects the rights of all women and birthing people to choose how and where they give birth. Right now, that means we are inviting you to share your experiences of accessing home birth services with us via the anonymous survey linked above. Go to: www.bit.ly/Hbirth to learn more about our campaign. You have the right to choose where you give birth. 💗By sharing your experiences with us and this post among your networks, you are helping us to drive change in maternity care and to protect the fundamental human rights of ALL women and birthing people. #homebirth #pregnancy #childbirth #humanrights #maternitycare #humanrightsinchildbirth #birthjustice #birthrights #birthworkers

The latest Care Quality Commission #StateofCare report is a damning reflection on the state of the NHS and the inability of current structures to address significant failings and systemic inequalities across the health system. ⚠️Only bold action at a national level can address these issues. That is why we are calling for a 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁 that upholds human rights for everyone throughout pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period – an act that ensures Safety, Accountability, Freedom of Choice and Equity are at the core of the maternity system.  👉🏽Read more about it at: https://bit.ly/CQCSCR. #humanrights #maternitycare #pregnancy #childbirth #latestnews #CQCreport #NHS

Happy Sunday! It’s been quite a week and I’m still buzzing from giving the Harold Moody 2024 lecture on Addressing Racism in medical education (thanks to all those who came). It was an hour to share the panel with those that have been working diligently to do just that . Ended the week at the QED conference in Manchester on a Labour Pains panel discussing birth trauma, the history of childbirth and the current state of our maternity services . Often my life is so busy I don’t have time to pause and reflect on all my individual wins (there are many loses too). So I was exceptionally grateful to see that Seun M. Included me in this lovely article for Glamour UK on Black women working to challenge inequality in the U.K. 🙏🏿 https://lnkd.in/e2wdP5ev

Chief Executive Officer, Birthrights (jobshare with Shanthi Gunesekera)

It was great to catch up with some familiar faces at the Science Museum on Tuesday evening including Tracey Bignall and Prof. Bola Owolabi, MRCGP MFPH(Hon), FRSPH. At the Department of Health and Social Care reception we heard about the government’s priorities for the NHS and plans to work in partnership to develop its 10-year health plan. https://lnkd.in/gCZWkBnz I welcomed the opportunity to speak to Health Secretary Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP and Baroness Gillian Merron, Minister for Patient Safety, Women’s Health and Mental Health to make the case for urgent action to tackle the persistent disparities in care and outcomes for Black and Brown women and other minoritised and marginalised groups and a focus on upholding human rights in maternity care for all women and birthing people.

🚨The latest MBRRACE-UK report paints a bleak picture of worsening outcomes for all women and birthing people and a failure to address the persistent gap in outcomes for Black and Asian communities. We know that individuals, families and communities have been left with a lifetime of trauma and devastation as a result of the worst possible outcomes presented in these figures. Now is the time to take action. ➡️Read our full response and why we are calling on the government to introduce a new SAFE Maternity Care Act to protect the human rights of all women and birthing people at: bit.ly/MBRRACE24. #latestnews #Birthrights #maternity #MBRRACE #humanrightsinchildbirth #pregnancy #NHS #childbirth #maternitycare

That is why Birthrights exists - to champion the fundamental human rights of women and birthing people during pregnancy and birth across the UK.   ❗The UK's maternity system is in crisis.
