Earlier this month, Alastair Marke, our Director-General, was invited to deliver an "Impulse Talk" during the AI & Innovation roundtable at #Baku #ClimateAction Week. Addressing the audience virtually, he emphasized the urgent need to halve global emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050, calling for systemic innovation to drive this ambitious agenda. As United Nations, climate negotiators, government and global climate organisations' representatives are preparing for #COP29, DG highlighted the critical role #AI can play in climate action and how BCI is involved in the development of international standards for digital #technologies under #ISO and CEN initiatives: 💡(1) AI is transforming climate action by processing large datasets to predict weather events, reduce #pollution, and improve #energy efficiency. From machine learning models analyzing satellite #data to optimizing industrial processes, AI is already helping reduce #carbonemissions in key sectors like manufacturing and logistics. Furthermore, AI enables smarter #renewableenergy management, enhancing energy output predictions and supporting the development of smart grids. 💡(2) DG outlined the "ISO taxonomy on AI systems" currently under development, which focuses on classifying AI methods and capabilities. By promoting a shared understanding of these technologies, we can better manage and regulate AI applications in climate change mitigation and adaptation. This includes a two-dimensional matrix that aligns AI techniques (like machine learning) with their capabilities (such as perception and learning), ensuring clearer communication among stakeholders. 💡(3) Significant challenges, however, remain. Policy, financial, and technological barriers hinder #innovation, and issues like the #digital divide and #dataprivacy concerns need attention. DG underscored the importance of addressing bias in AI systems, which can affect climate policies. By promoting diverse data, algorithmic fairness, and #transparency, we can ensure AI-driven climate solutions are both equitable and effective. As COP29 approaches, our Director-General urged AI innovators and policymakers to align AI applications with the #SustainableDevelopment Goals and the broader climate objectives. The BCI delegation looks forward to further collaborating with #Azerbaijan, the host of COP29 Azerbaijan, and meeting climate #negotiators, government officials, and other attending parties in November to advance these critical conversations. #ClimateActions #AIforGood #EvolvingTechnologies #ArtificialIntelligence #climatechange #Blockchain #sustainability
Blockchain & Climate Institute

BCI is the architect of a sustainable future, leveraging DLT & Blockchain technology to propel climate actions.
About us
Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is a not-for-profit entity combining the functions of a think-and-do tank, an advocacy group, and a chamber of commerce. Blockchain & Climate Institute provides a ‘super-connector’ platform for policy-makers, corporate executives and blockchain innovators to experiment and adopt the most viable concepts in an enabling environment. Our mission is to raise awareness among the international climate change policy community of the tremendous potential of Blockchain technology to considerably enhance climate actions. Our vision is the extensive deployment of blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Internet of Things (IoT) in state and non-state climate sustainability actions. Blockchain technology is increasingly recognized as one of the most enabling technologies to facilitate the implementation of the Paris Agreement and beyond. It represents an enormous challenge for global climate governance stakeholders, including state governments, international climate funds, development finance institutions, multinational corporations, technology innovators and relevant entrepreneurs across sectors, to engage in this paradigm shift in incubation. Stakeholders across different spectra of the international community seek an avenue or a common platform for harnessing the full potentials of this revolutionizing technology. The world needs an organisation of experts with solid knowledge on Blockchain and climate change to engage stakeholders in the current climate governance systems by curating and mainstreaming some of the most innovative yet administratively feasible use cases or solutions.

🌍 The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) successfully hosted the Technology Information Sessions 2024 (TIS2024), an annual event designed to support climate negotiators in their preparations for COP. Since 2021, these sessions have provided independent, cutting-edge insights into emerging digital technologies such as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), AI, IoT, and Big Data, with a focus on their application in climate policy. This year, TIS2024 welcomed live participants from over 30 countries across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and African regions plus many 60+ countries having subscribed to the recording productions. Through BCI’s exclusive COPlandia case study, we demonstrated how these emerging technologies can be applied in real-world climate initiatives, ensuring the discussions were both practical and forward-looking. Here are three key takeaways from the sessions: 1) #Blockchain platforms can verify carbon credits traded under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6. Smart contracts automate trades based on verified emission reductions. 2) IoT networks in coastal areas can monitor sea-level rise and feed data into AI systems to predict flood risks. Blockchain secures this data, enabling proactive measures by governments and communities. 3) IoT and blockchain ensure transparency and efficiency in resource allocation for agriculture and infrastructure. IoT sensors track water and energy usage, with blockchain providing accountability through secure data storage. We would like to extend our gratitude to all participants, our Director General, Alastair Marke, and the Executive Committee for their tireless efforts in making TIS2024 a success. 💡 #ClimateTech #AIForClimate #ISOStandards #SustainabilityStandards #COP29 #ClimateAction #GreenTechnology #DLTForClimate #ClimateFinance #ClimateSolutions #blockchaintechnology #evolvingtechnologies
