💀 125 years of The Arden Shakespeare: 10 things I’ve learned as Publisher 🐻 Margaret Bartley has been the Publisher of The Arden Shakespeare for 22 years, a mere 17% of its existence! There may be “no clock in the forest” of Arden, but this year we're marking 125 years since the publication of the very first Arden Shakespeare edition in 1899 – Edward Dowden’s Hamlet. Here are some of the things Margaret has learned during her time at The Arden Shakespeare. https://lnkd.in/eaXwJqxj #Shakespeare #TheArdenShakespeare

Last week was International Open Access Week: a chance for Bloomsbury Academic, together with the wider academic community, to reflect on our journey towards the goal of making more and more important research available on open access (OA) terms – i.e. freely available online for anyone with an internet connection to read, download and share. Whilst open access isn’t new to us – we have almost 500 OA titles in our academic portfolio – we’re always considering ways we can widen access to vital research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. That’s why last year we launched Bloomsbury Open Collections, our equitable model for publishing collections of books open access at no cost to the authors. There’s still time for libraries to get involved in this year’s Collections before the end of November: https://lnkd.in/eMqQeJbC We also have a wealth of resources for authors looking to understand more about how publishing a book OA works: https://lnkd.in/eimxRgRT And whilst Open Access Week may only last for seven days, our editors are available all year round to answer questions and discuss publishing options: https://lnkd.in/e-FUfaqC #OpenAccess #OAWeek2024 #AcademicPublishing

“Can you recommend a play by a writer of colour?” Our Methuen Drama imprint today releases its second (Incomplete) Lit in Colour Play List, introducing a further 60 plays by writers from Global Majority and minority ethnic backgrounds. The Play List is designed to support schools to create more representative and inclusive drama experiences within the English and Drama curricula. Together with the first Play List, the new List now brings the total number of plays to 117 – all suitable for secondary school age students to discover, perform and study. The Play Lists form part of Bloomsbury’s wider Lit in Colour Partnership with Penguin Random House UK and Runnymede Trust, and compliments the (Incomplete) Lit in Colour book list released annually by Penguin Books since 2021. Commenting on the Interim Results announced today, Nigel Newton, Chief Executive of Bloomsbury, said: “Bloomsbury’s strong results reflect implementation of the recently announced Bloomsbury 2030 vision, focused on our growth, portfolio and people. We have achieved our fifth consecutive double-digit growth in the first half with revenue growth of 32% to £179.8m, an increase of £43.1m, and profit1 growth of 50% to £26.6m, an increase of £8.9m. We have acquired Rowman & Littlefield, significantly strengthening our academic portfolio. We have been awarded the Great Place To Work UK Certification recognising the motivation and commitment of the people who work at Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury was admitted to the FTSE 250 on 1 August. Finally, we have risen to be the 39th largest publisher in the world up from 51st in 2020 according to the recent Global Publishing Ranking league table. Consumer division revenue growth of 47% was driven by the continued success of our fantasy fiction and a wide range of bestsellers from cookery to novels. Bloomsbury was voted Children’s Publisher of the Year 2024 at the British Book Awards and our international success was recognised by winning the British Book Award for Export. In the Academic division, we achieved revenue growth of 6%; the integration of Rowman & Littlefield is progressing well, its sales are on target and Bloomsbury Digital Resources (“BDR”) grew by 2%. Rowman & Littlefield will accelerate BDR’s growth, as Bloomsbury applies its proven ability to create digital revenues to Rowman & Littlefield’s market leading titles. Following our strong performance in the first half of this year and good trading in September and October, we now expect trading for full year 2024/25 to be ahead of the current consensus expectation.” https://lnkd.in/eqaA-c_T #InterimResults #CompanyAnnouncement #CompanyUpdate

We had a fantastic time at Argyle Primary School in Camden on Harry Potter Book Day last week, bringing the magic to over 400 children in the local borough of Bloomsbury's London HQ. We were joined by Harry Potter illustrator Jonny Duddle, who taught us all how to draw dragons, and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London Learning Team, who brought along some of the original props from the films! With thanks to Jemima Ward, Tash Payne, Ginni Arnold, Sian Robertson and Rebecca Fox for making the events happen. Photo credit: Jérôme Favre #HarryPotterBookDay #SchoolEvents #SchoolOutreach
