  • Fantastic news from The National Forest Company this week with their announcement of a 25% increase in tree canopy cover following 30 years of regeneration efforts. Bluesky International’s HQ is based in the heart of the National Forest so it is a project close to our hearts, providing stunning regenerated landscapes for us all to enjoy. Former mining communities have been transformed by the launch of the National Forest Company in the early 1990’s when they shared ambitious plans to transform some of the least wooded areas of the country, turning scarred landscapes into nature destinations. Bluesky’s National Tree Map (NTM) data was applied to understand the impact of the tree planting schemes. NTM is the only comprehensive, national dataset available, capturing height, location and canopy cover of all trees 3m and taller. It is a valuable tool that can be used to assess the impact and success of afforestation projects. To date 9.5 million trees have been planted across the National Forest, over 8000 hectares of habitats have been transformed and 5000 plus tourism jobs have been created. Find out more about the story behind the National Forest here: https://lnkd.in/e75PMW4H If you’d like to find out how NTM could support your work, get in touch with our Environmental Products Specialist Alice Hilton. • Tree, hedgerow and woodland (THaW) ecosystems are key components of the UK’s complex and interconnected ecosystem. All are historically and ecologically important providing crucial habitats and habitat corridors, mitigating against the impacts of climate change, and providing key ecosystem services. However, they are largely at threat from climate change, pests and diseases, and human impacts. A Scottish peatland has this week become the first wetlands area to be awarded UNESCO heritage site status. The Flow Country is the most expansive, intact and best example of a blanket bog system in the world.    With restoration of peatlands now an important focus on the environmental agenda, this is great news for the site to receive such a respected accolade – there are only 121 landscapes in the world that can boast UNESCO status.    A blanket bog is formed predominately in upland habitats when peat becomes waterlogged because of poor drainage. The peatland is acidic and infertile, meaning few plants other than heathers and cotton grasses survive.    There are approximately 2.25 million ha of blanket bog in the UK with most found in Scotland. Britain and Ireland together contain over 20% of the worlds blanket bog.     Some facts about the Flow Country site:  👉 It covers 4,000 sq km in the far north of Scotland  👉 It began to form naturally 10,000 years ago as glaciers melted  👉 In some areas the peat is believed to be over 10m thick storing more carbon than all Britain’s woodlands and forests – 400 million tonnes Peatlands play a significant role in carbon capture, water regulation and enable natural environments to thrive increasing biodiversity. However, over 80% of the UK’s peatlands have been degraded over a sustained period of time due to drainage and grazing. There are currently numerous projects underway to restore these areas.    Bluesky’s aerial imagery and derived datasets can support the planning and ongoing management of environmental restoration projects. National datasets such as Digital Terrain Models, NDVI, NDWI, the National Tree Map, and the National Hedgerow Map are all available – historic and current data – enabling accurate change analysis, visual modelling and planning.    You can read the full announcement here: https://lnkd.in/eci5j3VH   #peatlands #bogs #unesco #environmental #biodiversity   Images: Aerial imagery by Bluesky International, Flow Country images courtesy of World Heritage UK. • We have created a handy new applications guide for existing and potential customers of our National Tree Map (NTM) product. The guide is now available to download from our Website and details useful information about some of the sectors and projects that our NTM data has successfully been applied to, including overviews of customer case studies. Included in the guide is environmental modelling, urban forestry planning, insurance and risk, carbon capture and asset management. You can download it here: https://lnkd.in/d2Fv3RSm or to discuss how NTM could be applied to support your project get in touch with our NTM Product Specialist Alice Hilton. #treemap #trees #forestry #assetmanagement #treeplanting #urbangreening

  • Bluesky is excited to share the news that it has been awarded a contract by the Government’s Geospatial Commission, worth in excess of £15m, to supply aerial photography and height data to public sector organisations across Great Britain. It is the first time this contract has been awarded to a sole supplier and will see Bluesky supply national aerial data that has been captured on a two-year cyclic basis to more than 4500 local authorities, emergency services, environmental bodies, and central government departments. Branded as Aerial Photography for Great Britain (APGB), the contract also includes the provision of 3D height models and colour infrared, runs for 3 years (with an option to extend for a further 2 years). Bluesky’s CEO Rachel Tidmarsh DL said: “The award of this contract is a great achievement and is testament to the high standards of work we produce and the professionalism of our team." • Today is the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024 and we can’t quite can’t believe it’s been 12 years since we enjoyed the celebrations to mark the incredible London 2012 event. We have had a dig in our aerial image archive to check out the changes on the London Olympic Park site to see how it evolved since 2006 – a year prior to when development of the Park site began. Pre-Olympic Park development, we can see from our 2006 aerial images that the area was a heavily polluted, industrial wasteland inhabited by invasive plants. At that time it was classed as an area of urban deprivation. Fast forward to 2024 and our aerial imagery and our National Tree Map data paints a different picture showing restored wetland landscapes, with woodland and wildflower meadows. It shows that in 2010 tree canopy cover was just over 2 percent but by 2022 this had increased to over 11 percent. The park was specifically built for the Olympics, but many of the buildings are now community areas, including the aquatic centre which is now a community pool. The athletes village is now flats and housing (3,000 homes) and it is estimated that the park delivers £75m a year to the local area with projections that by 2040 the figure will be closer to £200m a year. A wonderful lasting legacy. If you’d like to find out more about our National Tree Map data, visit www.bluesky-world.com/ntm #olympics2024 #letthegamesbegin #london #treedata #aerialphotography

  • Yesterday the Bluesky team enjoyed a catered lunch as a thank you for working incredibly hard over the past few months to secure some great business wins. We will share more about these in the coming weeks, but to celebrate we enjoyed fabulous grilled meats, salad and pittas thanks to The Jockey Door and ice creams from Sam’s Ices. It’s always good to find time just to relax for an hour or so, enjoy the warm weather (while it’s here!) and socialise. And did we mention we have room on our team for a few more? We are currently recruiting to fill roles in our expanding flight operations and marketing teams to meet increased customer demand. Find out more about roles available here: #teamlunch #celebratring #teamsocial #workwithus #aerialsurvey
