Did you know that only 24% of workers feel they receive adequate training? This can lead to increased risks and lower productivity, morale, and safety. The 2024 Lighthouse Research & Advisory Frontline Development Trends Study highlighted an important gap between the training provided to workers and their requirements on the job. It’s important organisations find the right tools and knowledge to bridge this gap and keep workers happy and safe. Earlier this month, the Department of Employment and Labour published an important guide titled: ‘What every worker and employer should know about health and safety in the workplace’. This document outlines the key roles, obligations and rights that both employers and employees must understand to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety laws. While this has been developed in the interest of workers in South Africa, this can also be a useful tool for other regions to establish learnings and other key takeaways. https://lnkd.in/d4_nhc-p #healthandsafety #workplacesafety #employerobligations #employeerights #safetyfirst

The proportion of workers exposed to excessive heat in the Asia-Pacific is approximately 74.7%, according to the International Labour Organization, while 90% of workers globally are exposed to excessive heat that occurs outside of heatwaves. There is no doubt that extreme heat is killing thousands around the world annually, with numbers increasing year-on-year. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics there are more than 100,000 fly-in, fly-out workers in Australia flying to remote sites for large scale mining and oil and gas projects. Vital for many of these industries, FIFO workers are exposed to many risks other workers in Australia also face, such as heat stress and fatigue; however, they can be more vulnerable to these risks alongside mental health challenges which are exacerbated by working conditions. Reports by the Western Australian Association for Mental Health Commission found that FIFO workers are twice as likely to experience depression or anxiety compared to non-FIFO workers. In our latest blog we delve into how heat stress, fatigue, and mental well-being impact FIFO workers and how wearable technology can provide holistic support to mitigate these challenges effectively. https://lnkd.in/e35sZCiJ #flyinflyout #fifoworkers #australia #mining #oilandgas #healthandwellbeing #workplacesafety #heatstress #fatigue #mentalhealth #wearables

Firefighters face intense physical and mental challenges every day. Announced earlier this month, NIOSH's new Center for Firefighter Safety, Health, and Wellbeing is stepping up to address these risks head-on. John Howard, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Director says, “The Center for Firefighter Safety, Health, and Wellbeing allows NIOSH to bring together our research and knowledge in a way to better protect firefighters from both immediate and long-term risks from their jobs.” Learn more about how this initiative will help protect those who protect us in Safety+Health Magazine: https://lnkd.in/e9qYvV7W #firefightersafety #healthandwellbeing #workplacesafety #occupationalhealthandsafety #NIOSH
