Goldilocks might've been a sleepy, porridge-stealing housebreaker but she knew a thing or two about just-rightness. And while it's kinda fun to see so many SEOs suddenly get evangelical about 'brand' with the zeal of a convert (sorry, I've been in a lot of client meetings back in the days when the SEO agency were very dismissive of things like brand mentions, and highly relevant fame-making earned media) I think it's worth making a Goldilocks intervention. There's a balance. A balance between Branded Search (one of the things that increases with brand fame) and Unbranded Search. Even if Rand Fishkin has come out strongly for 100% brand. I learned about the research of Adam Audette via a SEJ article (link in comments) over ten years ago. They (or he) called it the 'Golden Mean'. An ideal ratio. I think it's still valid today. It's another 60:40 'rule' - a few years after Les Binet and Peter Field coined that ratio in a (not unrelated) marketing arena. Branded Search 60%, and Unbranded at 40%. Not a static thing - but a way of weighting a plan on one side or the other when it's out of whack. And not an exact ratio, but resting on the principle that too much branded and you're leaving organic growth opportunities on the table. Too much unbranded and you're failing to build your brand, and you're fighting for organic traffic every time. It's one reason why we're bear-faced fame and findability advocates.
