This week's #SupporterSunday is Danny Carlson and his team, who recently completed Scotland Coast to Coast 2024 in aid of Bowel Research UK, raising £1,500! "Many friends have asked whether I am raising money for any charity and its has taken some deliberation to find one that means a lot to me and will really make an impact. In 2020 I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and know of many friends that have Crohn's disease and other bowel inflammatory conditions. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to raise funds in support of Bowel Research UK" Read Danny's full story and sponsor him and the team today at https://lnkd.in/eK_Gm5qa #BowelResearch #BowelDisease #CrohnsDisease #UlcerativeColitis #IBS #IBD #TeamBRUK

🍲Celebrate the season with a delicious, gut-friendly Pumpkin Soup! Not only is it a warm treat, but pumpkin seeds are packed with fibre and nutrients that are great for your gut. Here’s a simple recipe: Ingredients: • 1 medium pumpkin (about 1kg), peeled and chopped • 1 large onion, chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 750ml vegetable stock • 1 tsp olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste • Optional: a pinch of nutmeg or cumin for added flavour Instructions: 1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot, add onion and garlic, and sauté until soft. 2. Add the chopped pumpkin and cook for a few minutes until it begins to soften. 3. Pour in the vegetable stock, season with salt, pepper, and any spices, and bring to a boil. 4. Reduce heat and let simmer for 15-20 minutes until pumpkin is tender. 5. Blend until smooth, adding a little extra stock if you prefer a thinner consistency. Pumpkin Seed Tip: Don’t toss those seeds! Rinse, dry, and roast them with a pinch of salt for a gut-friendly snack rich in fibre, protein, and healthy fats. Sprinkle some on your soup to add a tasty crunch too! At Bowel Research UK, we're excited to support research aimed at understanding how different polyp types influence rectal cancer treatment outcomes. Each year, 11,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with rectal cancer, yet we currently lack the ability to predict which tumours will respond best to specific therapies. This study, led by Ms. Helen Jones at the University of Oxford, focuses on two main types of polyps that can develop into rectal cancer. By examining genetic material from these polyps, the team aims to develop molecular tests to identify their origins. This crucial information could help tailor treatments, sparing patients from unnecessary radiotherapy and directing them towards more effective therapies. Three-quarters of Brits risk gut diseases due to a lack of diet variety! 🥦 A survey by Bowel Research UK revealed that 74% of people often stick to the same ingredients in their weekly shop, limiting their gut microbiome's diversity. This is concerning as a diverse diet is linked to better gut health and lower risk of bowel diseases. Dr Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed emphasises that instead of focusing on “superfoods”, incorporating a variety of plants, fruits, vegetables, and grains is key to boosting gut health. With nearly half of respondents unaware of the gut microbiome, raising awareness is crucial, especially among older adults at higher risk of bowel diseases.
