Gareth, from Wrexham in Wales, was just 33 years old when he died in hospital from pancreatitis. His parents, Lynn and Steve, share his story with us in the hopes of raising awareness and helping other families affected by the condition. Until he experienced discomfort in his stomach one day whilst at work, Gareth and his loved ones were going about their daily lives, as normal. Just two hours after first experiencing discomfort, Gareth's pain became severe. His family took him to A&E. In the early hours of the next morning, Gareth was diagnosed with pancreatitis and he was moved to critical care, where he stayed for the next 10 days. Unfortunately, over the next four weeks, Gareth became increasingly poorly and deteriorated before he could be moved to a specialist hospital. Back in critical care, his family received devastating news that the medical staff couldn't get his blood pressure back up to where it needed to be. Lynn and Steve explained: "Both his kidneys and liver failed and unfortunately, they couldn’t get things under control. His cause of death was multiple organ failure due to pancreatitis.” The cause of Gareth's pancreatitis has never been found but his family agreed to further tests being carried out after his death to help others affected in the future 💚 Pancreatitis doesn't judge. It can impact anyone. Out of the blue and without signs or symptoms. At Guts UK, we are committed to supporting research into pancreatitis and educating people on the pancreas, an organ which many people don't even know exists, let alone its vital role in our digestive systems. Ahead of Kranky Panky month, we spoke to Claire about her experiences with acute and chronic pancreatitis. Read her full story: https://lnkd.in/ebabPVwZ In 2019, Claire experienced severe pain just below her rib cage and thought she was having a heart attack. When this happened a second time, her friend suggested that it might be gallstones. After a rollercoaster of experiences, Claire was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Claire tells us: "I remember being told that if I tried to get out of bed, I was going to die.” 🚑 We chatted to Claire about how she feels now: “It’s hard to constantly wonder if I am healing. My life feels like it’s on hold and the fatigue is so hard to explain. I lost five stone and have lost some of my hair. I am also dealing with severe bile acid diarrhoea (BAD). I was told what happened to me is rare, but this doesn’t take away the weight of the pain this has caused me, both mentally and physically.” It's time that pancreatitis was taken more seriously. At Guts UK, pancreatitis is one of the priority research areas that we fund. With your support, we have the potential to change and save lives. Please stand with us this Kranky Panky month and help us to make crucial noise for pancreatitis by sharing this post 💚 📣 #KrankyPanky #Pancreatitis #AcutePancreatitis #ChronicPancreatitis #Pancreas #PancreatitisAwareness #GutsUK #Guts #Gallstones #BileAcidDiarrhoea
