🔬 Finding a new target for secondary breast cancer in the brain. Up to 30% of people whose breast cancer has spread will develop tumours in the brain. Because of their location, these tumours are particularly hard to treat. Recent research by Walk the Walk Worldwide Fellow Damir Varešlija and Professor Leonie Young found that a protein called RET plays a key role in the spread of oestrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancer to the brain. They found RET helps cancer cells stick to brain tissue, survive, and grow. And that it works with another protein to help these cancer cells spread to the brain. The team also found that targeting RET using specific inhibitor drugs significantly reduced the spread of breast cancer cells in the brains of mice. And they noticed that high levels of RET are linked to worse outcomes in people with ER-positive breast cancer. The team hope that future clinical trials will help to identify if RET inhibitors are an effective treatment for people with secondary breast cancer in the brain. https://lnkd.in/dqcCVK85

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 44. As a man, I struggled to find my place and I felt isolated, especially after having surgery. Men are often overlooked in the breast cancer conversation. That’s why it’s such an honour to represent men who’ve been affected by breast cancer and bring attention to this group.” - Phil “In February 2014, at the age of 25, I was diagnosed with stage 3 primary breast cancer. It was HER2 and oestrogen positive. My treatment included chemotherapy, radiotherapy, a mastectomy and hormonal medication.” - Laura “I was diagnosed with grade 3 primary breast cancer at 23 years old. It was HER2 positive, so I needed to have 6 rounds of chemotherapy. I lost a lot of weight and all of my hair. I also had a nipple-sparing double mastectomy, and permanent breast implants 6 months later. A year later, I had another surgery to remove my nipples to minimise the risk of breast cancer returning.” - Ella FAIRFAX & FAVOR have been supporting us for 9 years now. Most breast cancers don’t come back after treatment. But sometimes they can return, so it’s important you know what signs and symptoms to look out for. This Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day, discover the possible signs of secondary (metastatic) breast cancer. And tell your breast care nurse or GP if you have any symptoms that are new, don’t have an obvious cause and don’t go away. https://lnkd.in/eyF92pwq

“We want to improve survival for people with triple negative breast cancer. We’re exploring a new combination therapy that could make chemotherapy more effective, and improve outcomes for people with this type of breast cancer.” - Professor Richard Clarkson Researchers think that resistance to chemotherapy comes from a special type of tumour cell, called the breast cancer stem cell. Richard and his team believe that a protein called cFLIP helps these cancer cells resist chemotherapy. And, that it could work in 2 ways – helping breast cancer stem cells stay alive, and helping them hide from the immune system. The team hope that by blocking cFLIP, they can make breast cancer cells sensitive to chemotherapy again. They'll test a drug they’ve made to block cFLIP on breast cancer cells grown in the lab and in mice. They’ll also use it in combination with various chemotherapies to see which one would work best. https://lnkd.in/eVVdmW3F
