New report launch video: On Monday, September 23rd, BASIC’s Emerging Voices Network (EVN) hosted an online launch event for its report on ‘De-siloing Existential Threats II: Tracking the Interconnections Between Global Dangers’. The report culminates a second EVN policy cycle on de-siloing existential threats. For this phase, the EVN participants were taught futures and foresight techniques, which they then used to investigate the web of interconnections between existential threats. During the event, they present recommendations on how all states could and should recognise these links to develop better policies. Keynote: Dr Sara Kutchesfahani from Ploughshares Nivedita S. BASIC (British American Security Information Council) reposted this
Last week, a BASIC (British American Security Information Council) delegation visited Islamabad, Pakistan. It was a truly enriching experience and we have been hosted by several Universities and Think Tanks, including ISSRA - Institute For Strategic Studies, Research and Analysis at National Defence University Islamabad; School of Politics and International Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Pakistan; Faculty of Aerospace and Strategic Studies (FASS) - Air University; and @Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI). Our discussions were highly productive, focusing on India-Pakistan crisis management dynamics and Emerging and Disruptive Technologies (EDTs) in both Europe and South Asia. We also had the opportunity to share insights from our latest report, “Crisis Prevention and Management in South Asia: Mutual Confidence, Risk, and Responsibility” (https://lnkd.in/dFEC-CPK). A key finding from the report is that within the India-Pakistan nuclear relationship, there is mutual confidence in each side's restraint during crises, ensuring that neither adversary forces the other into a choice between a humiliating defeat and nuclear escalation. However, the sources of restraint are fragile ones, and in the context of future challenges to South Asian crisis stability, there is a risk that (over)confidence may slip into complacency. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all our colleagues and friends in Pakistan for the warm welcome and hospitality. We truly felt at home during our stay and we are looking forward to our next trip to Pakistan!
