The largest independent funder of research into heart and circulatory diseases in the UK

About us

We are the British Heart Foundation. Our vision is a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases. We raise money to research cures and treatments for the world’s biggest killers. We fund around £100 million of research each year into all heart and circulatory diseases and the things that cause them. Heart diseases. Stroke. Vascular dementia. Diabetes. They're all connected, and they're all under our microscope. We also help millions of people every year with our up to date information about heart and circulatory diseases so the UK public are better informed. We work hard to protect heart health and fight for better services for heart patients - communicating with politicians, government officials, workplaces and schools.

40% of people on the cardiac care waiting list in England are waiting longer than the maximum target treatment time of 18 weeks. The longer people wait for treatment, the higher their risk of becoming disabled from heart failure or dying prematurely.    Our #HeartsNeedMore campaign is calling on the new UK Government to make cardiovascular disease a health priority. Over the past six decades, we’ve made huge strides in improving outcomes for people living with heart and circulatory diseases in the UK. Today, this progress is at risk. We’re in the grip of a heart care crisis.   At the end of June 2024, the heart care waiting list rose to 426,460 - the highest figure on record. Hundreds of thousands of people are waiting over the maximum target treatment time for potentially life-saving heart care in many parts of the UK. Long waits put people at a higher risk of avoidable heart attacks, heart failure and even premature death. Only with more protection, focus, and research breakthroughs can we give people hope for a brighter, healthier future. People who need heart care can't wait. Our #HeartsNeedMore. We’re calling on the new UK Government to prioritise heart disease, now. Demand action today: https://lnkd.in/ehwpQTG7.

As part of this year’s Heart Hero Awards, three cutting-edge research projects are shortlisted for an award - and you have the power to choose the winner! One of these amazing BHF-funded research projects is led by Dr George Joy and his team at UCL. Dr Joy’s research is demonstrating how new technology could help doctors to detect symptoms of the potentially deadly heart condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), before conventional tests. HCM is an inherited condition that affects around 1 in 500 people in the UK. It causes the muscular walls of the heart to become thicker than normal, affecting how well the heart can pump blood around the body, and is a leading cause of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Through using new cutting-edge heart MRI scans and a high-tech ECG vest, Dr Joy’s research could help people with early symptoms of HCM receive treatments earlier, when they can be most effective. To find out more about Dr Joy’s innovate research, and to cast your vote, visit https://lnkd.in/eeSjrjtG. 🗳️

Thank you, Royal Mail for helping to raise vital lifesaving funds during #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM2024❤️ Switha Ram says “As the HR Business Partner for Processing, it was important to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM). To help educate and inspire a better understanding of the diversity in our business. For communities to come together and honour, recognise and celebrate the rich history of South Asia which has enriched British culture. It has been truly mesmerising to see our colleagues fully embrace this occasion. The celebrations throughout the month through music, dance, clothing and cuisine have been a fantastic opportunity to inject some fun and colour into the workplace, all whilst fundraising for our partner Charity, BHF.”
