*Disappointing news for Alzheimer's treatment access in the UK* Today, the MHRA has approved the Alzheimer’s drug #donanemab for use in Britain—yet once again, we face the disheartening reality that it won’t be available through the NHS. Similar to the recent decision on #lecanemab, NICE has concluded that the benefits of donanemab are not sufficient to justify its cost for NHS provision, despite its potential to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages. BNA President, Professor Tara Spires-Jones, shared her reaction with BBC News this morning. In her words: “While people living with dementia and their loved ones will undoubtedly be disappointed by the decision not to fund this new treatment on the NHS, the good news that new treatments can slow disease even a small amount is hopeful." As with lecanemab, MHRA approval of donanemab represents an important step towards much needed treatments for people living with dementia and new research is bringing us closer to treatments that should be safer and more effective. #Alzheimers #Dementia #DementiaResearch #Neuroscience #BNA
